The Buzz About Caffeine – Emily Sohn
Sept. 19, 2007 – Science News for Kids

In the article, The Buzz About Caffeine, Emily Sohn did a great job getting her point across; and getting you interested.
The article, which I got from Science News for Kids, was trying to explain that caffeine, found in coffee, soda, and other products, is neither good nor bad, but a bit of both. The article, at least from my point of view, did a great job of explaining all the facts, with out making it boring.
There were many things I liked about the article. For one, I really like the pictures. Some were just graphic, for example kids chugging soda, but there were others that made a great point. One even showed a spider web made from a normal spider compared to a web made by a spider on caffeine. I think pictures help bring the reader in, and also make the article a bit more fun.
I also liked the introduction. It was detailed, and made you want to read the rest of the article. I hate it when articles begin with a list of facts; makes me want to put it down from the start. But Sohn did not do that, and sucked you right in.
The lenth was good, not too long, but gave you enough information, and they’re was a good amount of facts, without being too overwhelming.
I really liked this article, everything about it was sweet!

Storing Memories before bedtime
C Gramling

This article was in the science news for kids. Scientist have found that our brain work while we are sleeping it have also been finding out that things we processed during the day can also have the brain learning while we are doing other things.
Studies show that part of the brain that we use to learn a task become active during sleep. Another study was done to see how the brain handles memories during the waking hours. The results were almost the same. Some scientists say this could mean that sleep isn’t as important for storing memories. Until that’s settled its better to be on the safe side and get plenty of rest. I had to read the article over a few times to understand it. I enjoyed the article after i could understand it.

Wake Up, Sleepy Gene

Some people can stay up all night and still get up and go to work the next day. Some people are not one of them like me. After a night without anough sleep if feel very cranky and I don't want to be bothered.Genes are stretches of DNA that work like an instruction manual for our cells. Genes tell our bodies and brains what to do. People have about 40,000 genes, and each gene can have different forms. So, for example, certain forms of some genes make your eyes blue. Other versions of those genes make your eyes brown. In a similar way, new research suggests that a gene called period3 affects how well you function without sleep. The discovery adds to older evidence that period3 helps determine whether you like to stay up late or get up early.
The period3 gene comes in two forms: short and long. Everyone has two copies of the gene. So, you may have two longs, two shorts, or one of each. Your particular combination depends on what your parents passed on to you.
Scientists from the University of Surrey in England studied 24 people who had either two short or two long copies of period3. Study participants had to stay awake for 40 hours straight. Then, they took tests that measured how quickly they pushed a button when numbers flashed on a screen and how well they could remember lists of numbers.
Results showed that the people with the short form of period3 performed much better on these tests than the people with the long form did. In both groups, people performed worst in the early morning. That's the time when truck drivers and other night-shift workers say they have the most trouble concentrating. I think I might have a long term of period3.
I think that this is a very good article that Emily Sohn wrote. My source was http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/ So this is what you could have if you never get enough sleep.

“Lack Of Sleep Doubles Risk of Death, But So Can Too Much Sleep”
By Researchers from the University of Warwick, and University College London, on the Website called Science Daily.

This article showed that lack of sleep or a greatly changed sleeping pattern can affect your health. If you get lower than seven hours of sleep, which is the average night for an adult, you are more likely to get cardiovascular disease.

Overall I liked this article, because it shows that lack of sleep is bad and lots of kids don’t get enough rest. It also shows that lack of sleep can affect you long-term, not just make your next day tiring.
One thing that kind of annoyed me about this article was that the title said that too much sleep can be bad for your body but in the article it didn’t have too much information about it. That disappointed me because I was wondering how too much sleep can hurt.
One question I had was whether this counted for kids. The article only referred to adults but I wonder if too much sleep for children is also bad.

I got this article from CNN.com 9-24-07

For over 30 years Alex, an African gray parrot, has been working with researchers to learn more about the way the bird brain works, has recently passed away. In his life span he has in fact, learned over a hundred words! Including the number zero to six, some colors, some nouns, and some desires and emotion words. He has been a real help to the researchers, but mimicking their words, has been able to teach two parrots of his own kind how to properly pronounce a word that they could only mumble before. He has also showed researchers that rather that just repeating things, parrots can learn to really understand human speech, and start, like Alex did, to speak it well, or as well as a parrot can.

I liked the article; it told me a lot about just how smart parrots are. I found it interesting how much a parrot can learn while being researched for up to twelve hours a day. And I think it talked more about what the parrot learned, and mourned more for its loss rather than saying what the researchers found out about the bird’s brain, which I would like to learn much more about.

Successful launch for NASA probe NASA's Dawn space probe has begun an eight-year journey to the Solar System's asteroid belt.
Author: Unknown
www.news.bbc.co.uk/

NASA launched a spacecraft to visit the small worlds of Ceres and Vesta. They did this to better understand how our solar system was formed.

I thought that it was very interesting because I’m amazed that a spacecraft could be launched into space and go that far out. I liked this article because it was full of information and when it does reach its destination it will answer a lot of the scientists questions. I also enjoyed a little map they had showing the route of the probe.
I was surprised that it was big enough to store enough fuel to last until it reached its destination, which is nearly five billion kilometers away. I am amazed constantly of what we can do and how we go about doing it. I picked this article because it was an topic of interest and also because I wanted to learn more about the probe and its destination.

Lessons from a Lonely Tortoise

Bryn Nelson

Science News for Kids

Summery: This article talks about the last known and living Pinta tortoise, named Lonesome George. This animal lives on a chain of islands known as the Galápagos Islands. These islands are housing many unique species, many of which are dieing out, like the Pinta. Researchers believe this is because people have brought other plants and animals that weren’t there before to the islands. There is, however, some hope for our lonely friend. After doing a DNA. Check on a tortoise from another island they relieved that this tortoise shared half of George’s DNA. This means that while the mother is from the island, the father must be from the same island as George, and therefore be the same species. The only problem, the two islands are over 50 miles apart. How a tortoise would be able to make this trip is on known. This does however show that George may have a mate out there, somewhere.

I thought that this article was very interesting, and really important. While global warming is a threat to our planet, many other beasts are in danger. Species of plants and animals die out everyday. The problem with this is the fact that when a species dies, it’s gone forever. There is no way of bringing it back. It is our duty as humans to protect these animals, and mostly because it is us who are killing them. We were the ones who brought the foreign animals and plants to the Galápagos Islands, which is the reason that George is in trouble in the first place.

Why the Sun seems to be 'dimming'
By David Sington
This article was found at bbc.co.uk

This article was about warming, and how the amounts of solar energy reaching the earth have been slowly lowering. This article is also about “Global Dimming”. Global Dimming is when everything starts to get darker because of clouds or something like that.

I thought the article was very interesting, though I can’t say I liked it very much because of the whole aspect of our world being dark.

I thought it was really interesting how everyone knew that global warming was a big deal, but this whole thing of global dimming makes global warming a much bigger deal, and now maybe more people will take global warming much more seriously.

After reading this article the biggest question I have is: is there a way to stop this from progressing any further? I’d like to know a whole lot more about the aspect of global warming and dimming.

The article I chose is called “Bee Disease” by Emily Sohn. I got it from science news for kids dot org. It talks about a possible reason for the mysterious decrease of honeybees in the U.S. It says that the cause could be a little known virus called Israeli acute-paralysis (IAPV). The article did a great job of explaining how they found this out and was easy to follow.
I think this article was really interesting. It’s so neat how science researchers can solve a mystery like the honeybee disappearance. At first people from Columbia University studied bee colonies and found two types fungi that were suspected of causing colony collapse disorder (the decrease of bees). However the fungi was as common in colonies without the disorder as it was in colonies with the disorder. Penn State researchers found out that it was IAVP in 83% of the infected colonies and only 5% from the uninfected colonies.
I wonder how they can tell if a colony has the disorder or not? I would like to know more about IAVP. Can humans get the same disease? I hope we find the reason and way to prevent it so honeybees don’t die out.

p.s. I think I already published but then I could't see it on the blog so I didn't know

Sugar Powered for Cell Phones
By: Emily Song

Wouldn’t it be cool I some day sugar might power our cell phones one day. Scientist has found out a way to make sugar in the electricity. The strategy includes Fuel cells, which take chemicals reactions to produce electrical currents. Manufactures already make fuel cells that depend on precious metals like platinum, to star those chemical reactions. Researches at St. Louis University are trying to use a protein called enzymes instead of the metals. They tried using it before in something ells but it didn’t work well. To not get this problem they invented molecules that go around the enzyme to protect it, now the enzyme to last fore months not days. I thought this article was very cool and exiting for an article. I think I would be cool to power my phone with sugar. So the next time you have a soda remember that could power your phone one day.

This article is called Listen and Learn and its by Emily Sohn. I got this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20070926/Feature1.asp. This article is about why some kid are having trouble hearing in class and its not them goofing off. It’s about how the room is near an air conditioning vent or a highway. Scientist were studying back round noise and that’s what came up air conditioning vent or a highway and it’s the faculty or the person who built it who made it to close to that. People are making such a big deal about this because the believe that a quieter class room may make kids learn more. I liked this article because now teachers can’t use that kids are making to much noise or if they cant hear

The Buzz About Caffeine
By. Emily Sohn
9/27/07-Science News for Kids

In the article "The Buzz About Caffeine" Emily Sohn explains to kids that caffeine in your diet is not good but also not bad. this article makes it very clear and easy for me to understand that although caffeine is used a lot it's not that bad but in a way she is trying to help us understand that there are ways to help prevent bad things happening to your diet.I
think she did an excellent job getting her point through not only kids, but teens, and maybe even parents.
I really liked how she put in examples by putting in pictures which helped a lot for me personally yo understand that caffeine can effect anyone and everyone,(the picture of the boy drinking soda).
This story was planned out very carefully to make sure that it keeps the reader at the edge of their seats, and make sure that nothing looses the readers interest in the article.
This article is worth reading and it doesn't take that long to read because its short but it's still able to get in all of its information. I recommend this article to almost everyone because its filled with information and it can help you a lot.

Buzz About Caffeine by Emily Sohn

Science News for Kids

This interesting article told about caffeine in coffee, soda and other stuff can bad and also even could be good. I actually really liked reading this article because I like soda and coffee drinks.
I liked the article and how it showed examples like when this caffeinated spider made the web.
Also, I liked the part when it showed all the drinks and how much caffeine was in it. Even though this article was a little long, I think it was worth it because Sohn made it so there were a lot of information but not till the point that it got boring.

The Buzz on Caffeine
By Jeffrey Kluger
www.Time.com

The Buzz on Caffeine is about the advantages and disadvantages on caffeine. It also tells you about how caffeine can be consumed the right way and how most drinkers consume caffeine the wrong way.

I liked this article because Jeffrey Kluger got the point across without boring me. It was very interesting because I can relate to this article due to fact that I drink coffee also. I also liked reading all the statistics about caffeine drinkers.
I was surprised that there are 167 million coffee drinkers in the U.S., and they consumed nearly 6.3 billion gallons last year alone. Also the average coffee drinker admits to 3.4 cups a day.
I wanted to know if it was true if caffeine actually stunted your growth.

Apples New Tunes-Arlyn Tobias Gajilan
Science & Technology

The article I picked was called Apples New Tunes and this is my review on it

In this artical, Arlyn Tobias Gajilan talks about the new ipod. Its a video nano that is also very thin. There is also a a ipod touch screen coming out.
This article was interesting and cool. I'm reallying into ipods and itunes and anything made by apple. So this article really was fun for me. I wish they would make an ipod with lyric on it, so that you could sing along to a new song even if you don't know the words.
This article really made me wonder how they make all of this stuff. How can they fit all of your songs AND a video onto that tiny thing? It's insane!
I was surprised that there was a touch screen ipod other than the iphone. i had no idea that they had made that! I think it is so awsome! This article was really interesting and i hope to learn more and hear more about ipod and and apples products!

This article is called Sugar power for technology. I found it on www.sciencenewsforkids.org.

Drinking sugary soda gives you energy. Some day, sugar may power electrical equipment also. Scientists have found a way to use sugar to power electronic devises such as cell phones and hand held video games. If scientists can create a way to turn sugar into electricity it might be able to run on electronics.

The new formula involves fuel cells that use chemical reactions to produce electrical currents. Manufacturers have made fuel cells that depend on certain precious metals like platinum, to spark chemical reactions. These metals are expensive and rare.

Researchers from St. Louis University use a type of protein called enzymes in place of the metals. Enzymes also spark chemical reactions as well as the metals. To keep up the pace that our bodies demand, our cells constantly produce new enzymes as the old ones break down.

When the enzymes interacted with the liquid chemical reactions release a flow of electrons into the wire. This process produces both water and electrical currents that could power electronic devises. So far, the fuel cells don’t produce much power.

Apple releases iPhone update; unlocked users nervous, by Greg Keizer. I found this article at computerworld.com.

This article was about a new phone/ipod that came out, and how it had some problems that they had to fix.

I think that this article was very interesting because I like technology. I also think that this was a very good idea for them to make a device like this.

The thing that was very interesting and surprised me about this article was that it is a new phone they just came out with it and they are already having problems with it. That’s probably not the best thing.

The question that have about this article is why didn’t they make sure that nothing was wrong with it before the started to sell it. I think that they should of had some of the workers have the phone and have them try it our first.

I would like to no more about how they fixed it and what they had to do to the phone to make it work better.

I also am wondering the same things about you. I wish that you went into a little more about what the article said, and what the harms were specifically.

Badgirl-

I thought it was awesome how much effort you put in describing this article.
I think you need a bit more about the questions you have about this article and what you would like to know more. You might also want to be careful about spelling/grammar.

1. What was the experience like for you?
The experience for me was very fun but when i was done squeezing the clothespin my finger hurt. But I think that happended to everyone. so pretty much the eperence was very good. I also thought that this lab was very fun, but it also taught us thing aswell.

2. What worked and what did not work in explaining the concept to someone else?

I think that MOSTLY everything worked exsept for when we had to find other people to test for the clothespin squezzing. I think that was the only thing that did not work out so well. The thing that I thought worked the best was writing out the procedure becase we know what to do step bye step when we test it out.

3. What did you learn from the experience?
The thing that I learned from this experience/lab was that when you do anything with activity you do it better if you exsersize first and then do whatever you were going to do. It works better.

4. What questions do you now have?
A couple of the questions that I have about this lab/ expereince is
-Why does it work better if you excersize first?
AND
-What happens to your thumb when you squeeze the cloths pin to make your thumb hurt?
