Making Connections Reflection - Period 9




You have spent this lab working with a partner to investigate a claim. The claim may have been about something fairly trivial, but the process you followed is exactly the one used by scientists around the world.

Now that you have completed this experiment, it is time to look back and think about what you have learned. Look over the following questions and then write a two to three-paragraph reflection that answers them. This is to be done on your own.

  • What have you learned about how scientists work and the methods they follow?
  • Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?
  • What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

1) What have you learned about how scientists work and the methods they follow?

~ I learned that when scientists work, they need to do everything by procedure or else the results of their experiment won't be absolutely right.

~ I also learned that the methods scientists follow are strict and in order. They have to make a hypothesis, write a procedure for their experiment, test the experiment, and then make a conclusion for accurate results.

2) Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?

~ I think this method would add to scientific knowledge because it helps you learn how scientists conduct experiments which will make you knowledgeable of the right way to conduct experiments.

3) What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

~ Next time, I would try to have my partner and I pay more attention to the time that we were exercising because we almost exercised for too long due to having too much fun with our exercising.

Making Connections Lab Reflection

Performing this lab helped me learn about how scientists work and the methods they use. I learned that scientists have certain guidelines that they follow when conducting a controlled experiment, and they have to meticulously plan their experiments so that every variable is taken into consideration.

This method would add to scientific knowledge because it is not misleading because a certain variable changed the outcome of the experiment. If an experiment is misleading, you would not be learning facts you would be learning lies.

If I performed this experiment again, I would test each exercise separately and then all of them together, and I would also add some different exercises.

1)I learned that scientist have to work very carfully and percise so the results they get will be nearky identical so anyone can perform the expariment. I also laerned that it is not easy to make an experiment from scratch
2) I think this method would add to scientific knoledge because if scientists are strict in fallowing procedures other scientist can cunduct the experiment and the knoledge will be shared.
3)The one thing i would change about my groups experiment is to have a larger sample group and cunduct less trials or decrease the amount of time we exercised.

1. I learned that if we were to actually want to figure out completely we'd have to go through a lot of trial and error.

2. I think this method would add to scientific because it's a method that seems realistic for almost anything. It shows if one thing helps another easily so I guess it works pretty well

3. Next time I'd use a bigger variety of people and exercises to make it so that the results would apply to more than a few people

I have learned that scientists have to make sure everything in their experiment is precise, and they can't leave out the littlest thing.

I find it tedious, to do that scientists do. I watch mythbusters and their experiments look pretty easy.


I thought that this experiment added to my scientific intelligence because i have learned how to properly conduct an experiment.


If I did our experiment again, I think that I would use a larger amount of people because the results may not be the same for everyone.

The clothespin was a fun lab. lab Scientis do alot to find out a question.I also leaned that there could be more than qone answer to your question. My hypotheisis was correct. Without a hypothesis this experiment willl be alot more diffuclt. This experiment was very tiering and hard but it tought us alot.
Its better to have a lot of information when doing this experiment.

-I have learned a lot about how scientists work. I learned that they have to do everything exactly otherwise the experiment will not work. I also learned that they have a very precise method that they have to follow.

2) Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?

-I think that this method would add to scientific knowledge because this is a universal way to show what you think and your steps. I think that scientists have to write out all the steps like that so if someone else wanted to perform their experiment they could do so easily.

3) What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

-I think that our experiment was performed very well. Everything went smoothly. The one thing that I might change is that I might have more people do the experiment to get more results.

I learned that scientists need to use a good procedure, or else, their whole experiment will most likely be messed up.

Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?
I think that this is a major helper because it can explain to one scientist the results of another scientist. You can understand it too.

What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?
I think that next time, I would use way more people because during the lab, my group had very high results, higher than other people. I would test it more broadly because then we would be able to know and understand everyone much better.

Experiment

What we had to do was a experiment on cloths pins. We had to see which opinion was right. We had to collect a lot of data and making a report out of what we did.

I have learned a lot about the experiment and I think it was very interesting. What I learned was that it is very important to fallow steps and write the steps clearly so other people can read it. So other people in the future can do the experiment. They do very good methods and we should learn from them. What I would of done differently was to work a bit harder and stay on topic more.

I learned that scientists have to follow the procedure or results will not become valid. To get the results they need to pay attention and complete all of the steps in the experiment.

2.] Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?

This method is good for scientific knowledge because it is a resourceful way for testing. This method just seems like the normal way to do it.

3.] What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?
We would probably test it on a variety of people to get even more results and also be able to make even more conclusions. We would also create more trials so to make sure to get rid of the outliers and we also might have tested if we performed exercising trial first would it have created similar results.

~I have learned that scientists make sure everything is done in a certain order, and that careful notes and observations are taken.

~I also learned data tables, graphs, and charts are really helpful when doing an experiment.

2) Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?

~I think that this method would give a simple and accurate why to conduct a procedure, and to keep track of the the end results.

3) What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

~I would like to get more people to do the experiment with us next time, because I think that a bigger range of people will give me a better understanding of what factors contribute to better clothespin pressing.

~ Based on this lab I have learned that scientists follow procedures. They need these procedures and need to write them down so other people can duplicate them and get the same results every time. I learned that if scientists change one thing in an experiment the results could be completely different. I also learned that you need to do more work then expected to create a properly conducted experiment and that there can be more then one answer to a question.

2.) Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?

~ I think this method would add to scientific knowledge because it teaches you how to conduct and follow a closed procedure. It teaches you to write clearly so others can read and follow it, and this method just seems like the best way to test something. This method is also good for knowledge because it gives a lot of information. It has your opinion (hypothesis,) the steps in which you did the experiment, and all your data. I just think if the method was any different scientists would have trouble reading other scientists’ work.

3.) What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

~ Well, for our experiment and everyone else’s, only 2 or 3 people were used. I think that if more people were used and if there were more trials, the data would be more reliable. If more people were used, specific body types and outliers would be covered up and wouldn’t matter as much. You would have more data and you would be able to make more conclusions based on the more reliable data.

I learned that it is crucial for scientists to follow the procedures for experiments, because one minor mistake could make the data that has been collected unreliable. I also learned that it is important to have a large sample group to perform the experiment because in the experiment we had to do, the number of times someone can squeeze a clothespin in a minute, the data may have varied on the type of person doing the experiment.

2.) Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?
I think this method would add to scientific knowledge because if a scientist wasn’t following the experiment procedure, they might record incorrect data and the progress we believed we were making wouldn’t be real.

3.) What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed the experiment?
When my partner and I performed the experiment, we didn’t get a large enough sample to conduct the experiment; it was just us. Since my partner was a bit more athletic than I, the data might have been incorrect. So next time, I would want to either have a larger group of people to carry out the experiment to make the data more accurate, or have my partner and I change the experiment procedure and have it over the course of two days, so the day after we did one part of the experiment (rested and then squeezed the clothespin or exercised and then squeezed the clothespin), we could exchange the task we did before the squeezing of the clothespin and then record our data.

Making Connections Reflection

From my experiment in class I was able to learn that in life when you are making an experiment you must be thorough and make sure every detail is covered. If any variable is not noticed (no matter how important) I can interfere and disrupt the whole testing process. To make sure that doesn’t happen you should make a list of things you must control for your experiment and what to look out for.
I think the scientific method is a great one to follow. Because it will either prove or disprove your point, there is no maybe. It is also good to write down the process of your experiment, so future generations can know what or what not to do, how it worked and how to perform it. And it gives you a better perspective on your point. When you have to write and explain your hypothesis you really need to understand it in a great expanse. And when you are done with your experiment you need to analyze the information to make sure you understand what the ending product really means.
Next time in my experiment I wouldn’t have the same person do both rest and exercise in it. The tiredness or the first one will effect the second.

1) I learned that scientists, like teachers, are poor, poor people who should be payed more, because their job is insanely tedious. Seriously. If I was a scientist and before I tested out anything I had to write a hypothesis and all that other stuff, I'd get really sick of it really fast and just scream and do the experiment.

There's also the fact that the actual experiment can be pretty tricky to set up, and the whole process is usually lackluster and overly precise and delicate, where, if one thing's just a tiny bit off you have to start all over again. (of course, it has to be, but still)

2) I think that, even though the whole, 'write a hypothesis and everything else down on paper and check it a million times and do everything else' thing is really really tedious and boring, it makes it easy to find any possible mistakes in your reasoning or whatever and correct them. Also, since it's a sort of universal thing, it makes sure that all the sciences of the world aren't off doing their own weird thing so nobody can understand their results if they're questioned.

3) Next time, if it was possible, I would try and test my parter's and my hypothesis with more people, since we only did it with just one person, and those aren't really very reliable results.

Also, if we could, I would've liked to have an exercise that was actually accepted by the majority of society as exercise, not just jogging up and down the stairs a bunch of times (yeah, it's tiring, but most people think jogging or biking or weight lifting when you say exercise)

I learned that scientists learn by trial and error. I alos learned that scientists orginize their thoughts very neatly. they orginize their thoughts by making charts and things like that.
i also learned that every experiment must have a procedure to get the right results.

2) Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?
I think that this following method would add to scientific knowledge becasue then there would be no confusion and it is eaiser

3)what would you do diffrently next time in terms of how your group preformed your experiment?
First i would not volenteer myself to be the one running up and down the stairs. Second i would orginize the group more in terms of their jobs. Last I would be sure every measurment is exact.

I have learned all about how scientists work and I realized how much patience and determination you have to have to create good, well planned out experiment and lab. Being a scientist is not all fun and games, there is a lot of preparation and work put into the process. This type of method for scientists is a great way to organize and understand your data. I believe that this is a great method for scientific knowledge. I believe that I would have taken more time and put a little more consideration into planning and designing my experiment.

1) The things that learned were that the experiment is different if a guy and a girl do because they have different standards. Also I learned that the methods that scientists use are smart because of the end result.
2) I think the methods would add because they help the living of men and women and possibly the animal life.
3) The things that I will do differently is have all boys or all girls and that way the numbers will be closer and you will not have an outlier.
