Paper Airplane Lab Reflection
We have spent the last week or so doing our first experiment. We did this to learn for ourselves how scientists work.
Now that you have completed this experiment, it is time to look back and think about what you have learned. Look over the following questions and then write a two to three-paragraph reflection that answers them. This is to be done on your own.
- What have you learned about how scientists work and the methods they follow?
- Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?
- What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

I was surprised at the outcome of our plains. The 'MyPlane' was supposed to have a higher averaged distance then all the others, and it did but we all thought the 'Mildredd was going to rash and burn, which in a sense it did. One of our members carelessly led 'Mildredd' into a picture in the gym. After the 'MyPlane', the 'Eagle' was supposed to be next but to make up for his loss of 'Mildredd', the creator of the 'MyPlane' made 'Mildredd'(2.0). this one completely wiped the floor with the 'Eagle' and so the scores were:
MyPlane-1,289 centimeters.
Mildredd(2.0)-968 centimeters.
Eagle-429 centimeters.
Unfortunately my plane(don't get confused) was dominated by the others the reason, a glitch in the design. a hole in the left flap made it spiral down... good hangtime though!
Scientists have a lot of work to do. They have so many steps to follow, and if they do one wrong, the information will be completely inaccurate! I learned a lot about how much work scientists have. Their job must be stressful. The method is very straight forward, and easy to follow, but it is a lot of work. You have to write EVERYTHING down!
The method can add to scientific knowledge because it covers everything you need to know. You form a question to test, you research what you are testing, then write what you guess would happen, and then you test it. After that, you test it, and draw conclusions. If someone doesn’t think you are correct, they can re-do the experiments, according to your notes on the thing you tested.
Next time I do an experiment like this one, I would probably have machines do the throwing, so that the plane is thrown the same way each time. Ditto with the stopwatch. I also would have gotten better information, and better planes to test out. Maybe I also would do it in a bigger space, with not so many people in the room when we did it. And I would like to make sure that there were no air currents strong enough to change the results.
Here is my airplane reflection thingy. (Dont you love my ah-maze-ing vocab?)
I learned that scientist follow a method so other scientist can understand their experiments, and so that they can be repeated. Scientific method also helps by just making it easier to do the experiment, having the plan all laid out for you.
The method adds to scientific knowledge by making it easier to display your data, and so all scientists do the same basic things
If I did this again, there would be 3 things I would do differently. One, get better planes. Two, I would have one person throw all three planes all five times, since everyone’s throwing style varies. And three, I would isolate the plane and thrower in a larger area (such as an airplane hanger) so as not to get discouraged by other plane throwers.
The End
I think the Scientific Method is an easy to use format. The Airplane experiment was a good start to writing the labs. It was a fun experiment that involved more than writing, we got to get up and fly our planes. I liked the research part because it was fun to be creative and fold and try knew plane designs.
It was interesting the way different planes flew. my plane stayed in the air for 5 seconds!
It was awsome! I didn't think that paper airplanes could fly that long, especially one that I made.
The planes that were made by every group were pretty amazing. This was fun. It would be awesome to do another experiment like this again.

PAPER AIRPLANE REFLECTION
I think the scientific method is a really good and easy method that a lot of scientists follow. I think this method would add to scientific knowledge a lot. This way is good to help you lay out all your information. This method is also an easier method then others. If I were to do this paper airplane project all over again there would be a couple of things I would change. On all of the planes I would make all of them narrower because what worked for me was the narrower the planes were the further the planes went. What I would also do is get someone to throw all tree of the planes because when I through plane number one even though it was the farthest I think it could of gone farther. That’s just some of the things I would do if I did another project like this. I really liked this project and the best thing about it was testing and designing the airplanes.
I have learned that scientists work very precisely and accurate. the method that scientists use is called the scientific method. the steps in the scientific method are
1. A QUESTION OR PROBLEM IS IDENTIFIED AND STATED
I've learned that scientists work very accurately
woops pressed the wrong button sorry
I have learned that scientists work very precisely and accurate. the method that scientists use is called the scientific method. the steps in the scientific method are
1.A QUESTION OR PROBLEM IS IDENTIFIED AND STATED.
2.BACKROUND RESEARCH OR LITERATURE REVEIW IS DONE TO FIND OUT WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THE TOPIC.
3.A HYPOTHOSIS IS FORMED - THIS IS AN EDUCATED GUESS ABOUT THE RESULTOF THE EXPARIMENT BASED ON THE RESULT OF THE EXPERIMENT BASED ON THE INFORMATION LEARNED DURING THE BACKGROUND RESEARCH.
4.A VERY DETAILD , STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE IS DEVELOPED TO TEST THE HYPOTHOSIS. THIS IS ALSO CALLED THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN OR METHODOLIDGY. IT INCLUDES A LIST OF MATERIALS.
5.THE INVESIGATION IS CONDUCTED AND DATA IS COLLECTED.
6.THE DATA IS ANALYZED
7.CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN. WHAT DOES THE DATA MEAN?
8.RESULTS ARE COMMUNICATED. OTHER SCIENTESTS REVEW THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION.
the scientific method adds to scientific knowledge because it's keeping a record of whats happened in your experiment and so other people can look at it and do it again if they wanted to. if we could redo the experiment we definitely would have taken more time to do the planes.
I thought the airplane project was ok. It was kind of weird to do it because we are in the process of learning how living things work and then we do this new expierement. I thought it was fun because I learned how to make a airplane and then play with it. I think that this project was nessacery because it helped us learn how scienctist figure out things and how we need to do different steps to learn something new. I also thought this was fun because it was just cool to learn and play at the same time.
>I have learned that Scientists are hard working peeps that have tough jobs finding out about specific things. Although a lot of the time their investigations don’t come out true, they still work really hard. Their methods are interesting of how they will find information and stuff like that. Some scientists are really great at finding out info on stuff like bugs and junk. Galileo is a great one. Their hypotheses are really cool how they come up with those educated guesses.
>Scientific Method adds to sciences knowledge by giving it an organized investigation idea with allayed out format of steps. The results in the end can be therefore read by other scientists who get the message clearly. Whoever came up with the idea was thinking of a great idea. When we did the paper airplane project, thinking of a hypothesis gave some help.
>Next time I do this (if I do,) I’ll hopefully have a better educated guess. Although we thought the plane numbered 2 would fly the farthest, it didn’t. It was long and narrow so I was thinking it mite just go real far. Obviously it didn’t and now I wish I had thought the green stubby weird one was my guess.
i liked this asighnment because it was about paper air planes. He probably gave the paper airplane thing because it is easy to do and it will teach us about the scientific method without just reading it from a text book. Also i liked it because we were given whole periods to just desighn paper air planes. I also think that my plane did pretty well it got around 19 meters, that was about what i thought it would get but i didn't think that planes that looked exactly like ours would get so good hangtime. All in all i think it was a good project and/or lab.
I learned that scientists have to gain lots and lots of facts before they can say that a theory is a law. Also sometimes the theory can be off just by a little bit and that would throw off the whole experiment and they would have to start over with a new theory which they would have to test out again. Also they follow a couple of steps when experimenting something which is called the Scientific Method.
I think that the Scientific Method is a great add to scientific knowledge because it is a very organized step-by-step process which can clearly help with a experiment. Also it keeps track of all the data you have so if you mess up, all you have to do is go back and look at the data to see where you messed up.
I think that the next time that I have to do an experiment with paper airplanes, I would probably do the something because my group and I did pretty good on this. The only thing that I would have to change with my group is where we did our testing. Because our paper airplanes kept crashing against the wall each time they were thrown so our data could only measure up to the wall. So we could have gotten better numbers for our data.
oops! I posted twice!
PAPER AIRPLANE EXPERIMENT REFLECTION
I think that the Scientific Method is easy but smart format to use. It makes it organized to follow. So your information gathered makes sense. So , the Scientific Method definitely would add to scientific knowledge. Scientists have to record and learn so much that this method makes it a lot easier.
If our group were to do this experiment over again, I think that we should not just base which plane we think would be the best just because one person says it is the "WORLD RECORD HOLDING PAPER AIRPLANE." Just because one person did well with that design doesn't mean it will ALWAYS work. Which is why I think our hypothesis was wrong.
From this experiment, I have learned that scientists follow a very precise method. They have to state the problem and gather research, and then they make the hypothesis. . Next they have to determine the procedure. Then they collect the data. After that, they analyze it, and then draw conclusions. It is a very structured procedure.
This method is designed to gather as much information as possible on the specific subject. The hypothesis has to be extremely defined or else the information is useless. There also can only be one variable, or else the whole experiment is worthless. For example, if you were testing the growth speed of daisies vs. sunflowers, and you placed the daisies in a dark room and the sunflowers in a sunny room, you wouldn’t be able to tell what made the specific flower grow faster; the breed or the lighting.
If I were to perform this experiment a second time, I think someone else should fly the planes. The person in my group who flew them had an unbelievable throw, and I believe that that greatly influenced the success of our experiment. If I had flown the planes, they wouldn’t have gone half the distance they did.
From what experimenting we have done so far this year I have learned hat being a scientists is a lot of work. They have a good method to follow so that can help them but they pretty much have to do all the work by themselves. All the work they have to do is really hard work and a lot but it’s for a good cause and it makes regular working peoples lives much easier. Like now scientists are working on a cure for cancer and aids and if they find a cure that can make our lives so much easier.
The method they follow can make all their research much easier. If they have an easer way of doing things and a better way of testing they can get the out come faster and have the outcome be correct every time. If they can be able to get the outcome right every time then they wont be giving the wrong answer out to the public and then have to change it on the news when they figure out hat what they said before was incorrect in formation.
Next time we do experiments in groups I’d like to work more in a team and make all the decisions as a team. I would like to be more organized next time this time we seemed to be a little behind because we didn’t know what we were going to do going into each day. Next time I would also like to stay on pays with every one cause as I said before this time we seemed to be a little behind every one a little.
