Weekly Science Article Report - January 25th - Period 7

Here is the place for this week's weekly science article report.

As usual, please find an article about science that you think is cool and worth writing about. The more inspired you are, the better your reflection will be.

Then, you are writing a report that has 3 parts:
  • The citation - the name of your article, who wrote it, and where did it come from. Include a link if you got it online.
  • The summary - a one or two sentence recap of the article (no more).
  • The reflection - a discussion (two or three paragraphs) about what you thought about the article. Did you like it or not? Why? What interested you about it and why? What questions or suggestions do you have for the writer?

I look forward to reading your reflections.

The article that I chose this week is called “Giant Palm Tree Puzzles Botanists” by Jonny Hogg on the BBC website. The address is http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7193161.stm

This article is about a species of palm tree that grows in Madagascar. It is 60 ft. tall and 16 ft. long, which is the tallest tree in the country. Its lifespan is 100 years, but it isn’t so special for most of that part of its life. Except for the end. The branches of the trees are covered with tiny flowers, which are pollinated and turn into fruit. The problem is, that the tree uses up so much energy flowering, it ends up collapsing and dying. It is believed that this tree has been around ever since Madagascar separated with India (this is believed because of a similar plant found in Asia 6000 kilometers away) like 80 million years ago!

This article intrigued me because it was so bizarre! I have never heard of any plant that kills itself because it uses up too much energy! Especially something so big and tall like that tree. I would have thought that since the tree is so big, it should be able to stand up to energy loss, since it has to take care of itself. It also surprised me that none of the natives of Madagascar had witnessed it (though it makes sense because they probably aren’t 100 years old). It seems really odd that it would take so long! Another cool fact about it is that it is only in a confined area of Madagascar with a population of only about 92 individual trees. It amazes me that there are so few, but when I think about it, it makes sense because it pollinates once every 100 years.

This article really got me thinking. Why does the tree kill itself? What’s the point of it? I want to know what other trees have similar cycles to this one. It’s such an out of the ordinary plant (for me at least, because I’m not used to this type of plant) that it kind of confuses me. I want to know what the tree started out like 80 million years ago. Did it go through a dramatic change over this time, or has it not changed at all? I also want to know why it takes so long for the trees to bloom. Is it because the tree has to mature? Or is it because the tree has to store up so much energy? How much energy does it have to have? There are so many interesting and intriguing questions, that I think I will need to learn more!

February’s Ideal Eclipse of the Moon
Alan MacRobert
From Sky and Telescope February 2008

My article is about the total lunar eclipse coming up...
Imagine this. You walk outside late on one cold February night, and happen to glance up at the dark sky. You then see a sight that is both amazing AND confusing all at the same time! The moon is shining red in the sky! What is going on here?
Well, the cold night is actually the 20th of February and it’s about 10:30. What’s going on is a total lunar eclipse, the last one until 2010! But wait, your thinking, what exactly is this ‘amazing’ total lunar eclipse anyways?
A lunar eclipse is when the moon passes into the Earth’s shadow, more scientifically the ‘umbra’. When the entire moon is in the ‘umbra’ we call it a total eclipse, and when the moon is only partially in the ‘umbra’ we call it a partial lunar eclipse. But why is the moon affected by the shadow? The moon doesn’t actually glow, it reflects sunlight, so the moon is essentially losing it’s light. If that’s so, your thinking now, why would the moon turn red? That’s because of the way the Earth’s atmosphere bends the light. That’s also why sunrises and sunsets are red in color.
Well, the article itself tells you all of that, and a whole lot more. (I thought you might want some background information) I really enjoyed the article. I liked the way the article was presented, although some people may have some trouble understanding the format, since it centers on extra graphics like pictures, charts, boxes of text, etcetera. I’m really interested in space science, and I’ve actually taken the time to try to see a lunar eclipse on a cold and cloud night. (Didn’t work out well…) So when my mom picked up the Sky and Night magazine so I could see this article, I was so incredibly happy! I really hope the night is clear and everyone who reads this gets a great view.

The article that I read called Companion Dog was really cool. It was really cool because it talked about the way the dog and a human bond. This article came from science daily and I am not sure who the author is.
I liked this article a lot because I have dog and it is good to know about what you dog are thinking about. Also the way they are since they can’t talk. One thing that I think the person who wrote it could improve on is, he or she could have written more about the topic.
I also liked this article because it told me a lot about dogs that I didn’t know about. What pulled me in to reading this article was the dog part. As you can see I love love dogs! The person that wrote the article must love dogs enough to post an article about it. You should read it!

Weekly Science Article Report.

This article that I read was called, Astronomers: Asteroid Can Hit Mars in January. I got it off of pageflakes and here is the linkt to it...

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/12/21/mars.asteroid.ap/index.html?eref=rss_space

This article is mainly about and astroid that might hit Mars on January 30th. If the astroid doesnt hit Mars it will probably go near the equator.

I thought that this article was very interesting. This article got me thinking about the robot on Mars and whats going to happen to it. It turns out that the robot is not in fanger because it lies outside the impact zone. I really liked this article and i recommend that you should read it.

im interested in this article because the astroid is going to hit very soon and i would like to no what happens then. One of my quetions are how much is whats the probability of it hitting this week, did the chance of the astroid hitting mars go up or go down?

Article: Amphibian Skin May Offer new Therapy against Bacterial Infections
Found It: www.science daily.com (mr.ardito’s page flakes)
This article was about researchers in Italy who found out that frog skin have strains multi-drug resistance to hospital-acquired infections (stuff that cures bad infection stuff). They are going to use it on stuff like the staph disease.
I liked this article because there is reassurance that there is a cure for irritated or infected skin. This was a great discovery in the field of science and health.
I think that scientists should have found this anti-biotic sooner because of all the frogs they dissect. I think the reason that this was realized was because of the pollution. Any creature that survives in or near our wastes (and lives), probably has some weird way of protecting itself.
One question I have is, how will doctors use this to information help cure their patient? This article had a lot of facts and information that is very important for people to know.

Author: Brian Holmes

Summery: This article is about the suns magnetic field.

Reflection: A international space craft took an X-ray picture of the sun. The picture showed that the sun has a stronger magnetic force then scientists thought. The suns magnetic field can cause solar storms witch could damage satellites. These solar storms can affect earth and that would not be good. With this X-ray telescope scientists can see what is going on in the sun.

Dozens of Rare Reptiles Die In India

Dozens of Rare Reptiles Die in India comes from usatoday.com. It was written by Biswajeet Banerjee, Associated Press.
In recent weeks, over fifty Gharials—reptiles that look just like crocodiles except they have a longer snout--have died in a river sanctuary in India. Their bodies have been found washed up along the Chambal River, beginning in December. The exact number of dead gharials remains unclear. In December, scientists found the bodies of 21 gharials over the course of three days, and they continued washing ashore in the following weeks. The latest idea about what has been killing them is an unknown parasite scientists have found in the liver and kidneys of dead gharials. Another idea is that they became sick after eating contaminated fish from another polluted that connects to the Chambal.
I thought this article was interesting. I thought the idea that some unknown parasite is killing these creatures was really creepy, kind of cool, but also sad. Scientists estimate that only about one thousand five hundred Gharials are left in the world, and in the past two months, over fifty have already died, and more of them continue to wash ashore dead. This, I find is very scary. Especially if conservationists find that it is contaminated fish killing the Gharials. I find it scary because it shows how drastic global warming is becoming. How slowly, Earth’s animals may fade into oblivion, their existence on the planet becoming a memory. I don’t mean, obviously, every animal on Earth won’t drop dead overnight. I do mean, however, that many of the creatures who inhabit our planet are on the verge of extinction, and the heating of our atmosphere might just push them over the edge. And I’m not talking about bizarre, unusual animals that no one has ever heard of (like Gharials). Like the Polar Bears up north, I predict that, not to long from now, we will watch them go extinct. I don’t know about you, but I find that extremely depressing.
(I have no questions about this article.)

U.S. Given Poor Marks on the Environment

Washington- a new international ranking of environmental performance puts the United States of the group 8 of the industrialized nations and 39th among the 149 countries on the list. European countries dominate the top places in the ranking which includes sanitation, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and 20 other measures. The top 10 countries with scores 87 or better are Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. The others at the top of the rankings are Austria, France, Latvia, Costa Rica, Columbia and New Zealand. “We are putting more weight on the climate change” says Daniel Esty, the report’s lead author, the director of Yale center for the Environmental Law and Policy. The United States score was 81.0, it is slipping down said Esty. He said the U.S. continues to have a bottom-tier performance in greenhouse emissions. Switzerland is the fourth, and most refined, of a series ranking first issued in 2002. On the list of 2006 the United States was ranked 28th. In the recent years the United States improved its carbon intensity. New Zealand and Japan led the Asian-Pacific nations, with performance scores of 88.9 and 84.5. Costa Rica {90.5}, Colombia {88.3}, and Canada {86.6} led the 26 countries of the Americas; Haiti{60.7} was last in this group.

I found my article Diamond Glow by Emily Sohn at www.sciencenewsforkids.org . It is about diamonds and a way to distinguish certain genuine diamonds from imitations. I thought this article was great because it describes lots of famous gems and how they looked under normal light and then how they looked after being it exposed to ultra violet light.
I also enjoyed reading about b7 natural blue diamonds; three man-made gems and a gray diamond that turned blue.
In the end, I realized that scientists have an interesting and difficult job in distinguishing real diamonds from fake diamonds. However I would like to know which kinds of diamonds turn out to be fakes. What’s more, I would like to learn more about would the sale price of the imitation diamonds too.

The name of the article i have is Memory by Hypnosis and its by Emily Sohn.I got this article at http://sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20080116/Note3.asp.
The article is about how scientist are using Hypnosis to study the mind's amazing and mysterious ability.
I thought the article was very intersting becauce scientist today are pretty much using alot of every day stuff to find more out then they did befor on it and i would of never thought that they would use Hypnosis to find out how the barin works.
I liked the article because it was intersting on how scientis use Hypnosis to find out how the barin works.
What intested me was that Hypnosis can be used to see how the barin works in memorizeing stuff like movies.
I have no questions or suggestions for her

Frog Chemist creates a Deadlier Poison

Susan Milius
http://sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20030910/Note3.asp

The article was about how some poisonous frogs from South Africa were able to toxin from their food. Also how a chemist learned how to make the frog even more poisonous then it already was.

I thought that the article was good. It was good in my opinion because it caught my attention in some spots of the article. I thought that it was interesting because that a poisonous frog actually was able to get even more poisonous just by eating other animals.

I think that the people that worked on the article could have given more facts about the poisonous frogs because there wasn’t really that much information about the frog in the article.

MY dad a I planted pants inside of my frog tank, I did not think they would live but they have been living from the second we planted them.
When we got them they were very small and we though were going to stay like that but they are 4 feet, we might need to cut them because they are getting to big for the tank!
In my tank I have fish and frogs, we have a waterfall going down in the tank and at 6 inches of water with small fish in the water that will not be killed by the poison that the frogs put on the water.
We planted the plants in peat moth and it worked very well.
Inside the tank it is 90 degrease it’s very humid.
We got the plants from south America, and if it gets under 75 degrease they will die.
I think that putting plants, Fish from the frogs environment , a thing at the top that makes rain and 90 degrease makes them feel like that are not in a tank.

A solar grand plan- by Ken Zweibel, James Mason and Vasilis Fthenakis

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=a-solar-grand-plan

This article is about solar power and it it helpe most of the U.S. with electricity.

Reflection- I liked this article because it shows that most of our electricity comes from solar power and most people don't know that. What i thought about this article was wow i never really thought that solar power can have such an effect on the United States. What interested me about this article is that the fact that by 2050 69% of the U.S. electricity comes from solar power. And it will 35% of the United States total energy.

I have no question for the writer.

"Honey, iBricked the New Mobile Phone!"
By Steven Levy
Link: http://www.newsweek.com/id/42489

The article I read this week was about how some iPhone users, "unlocked" their phone to use it on other phone service providers. Apple said that their iPhone was exclusively for AT&T users only and that the damage the "unlocked" users caused is unrepairable.

I thought the people who unlocked the iPhone were doing it for the wrong reasons. They only unlocked the iPhone to go on the internet to buy free ring tones and they did not want to switch phone providers. Apple is right not let this situation go and I am glad that they are trying to improve the phone as much as they can.

I liked the article I read, a lot actually. It said what it needed to say about the iPhone unlockers and what Apple was doing about the situation.

I was interested by this article when I saw it because both my parents have the iPhone. And I am interested in technology and love the iPhone itself. The only questions I have for this writer is, what other punishment did the iPhone unlockers get besides a $400 dollar fine? And if Apple was actually planning on adding instant-messaging service and Word document?

"Robots to Collect Dangerous Data"
By Anna-Marie

Leverhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7202894.stm

This article is about robot planes that have been used a long time, but now these structures are adapted to scientific use. This article mentions that Noaa (National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration) researchers say it could revolutionise the way the earth's system is monitored. The Noaa agency has a $3m invesment to the technology. According to this article in November 2007 Noaa flew the first unnamed plane, called the Aerosonde, into hurricane force winds. They were able to monitor hurricane Noel using a "integrating observing concept" by combining the data from manned aircraft, to the Aeorsondes and satellites. Scientists will investigate various unnamed aircraft models for different missions. UAS owns a plane that can fly for one whole day, 70 knots, with a payload of a few pounds. On the other hand, NASA owns one of these planes (the Global Hawk) which can fly for 30 hours, with 300 knots. And get this, its creator claims it can hover over half a planet carrying 2000 pounds!

In my opinion reading this article was very enjoyable addicting to read. Knowing that their is planes out there with no pilot flying around on its own just is out of this world. I have seen a movie called STEALTH where their is a ship flying around with no pilot. It amazed me that the NASA plane called the Global Hawk can fly for 30 hours, with 300 knots with no pilot! From reading this article it encourages me to read more articles like this in magazines like National Geographic or Time. After reading this I can see how far this planet has came all of this work!

“DIAMOND GLOW” by Emily Sohn
>This article I read was about how real diamonds glow when put in ultra violet light. Scientists have found a way to tell weather or not diamonds are real or fake. It is a new way to prove people wrong who sell fake merchandise to daily customers.
>I thought this article was interesting, although I thought it could be a bit longer. Other wise it was good. I really wonder how they find this fabulous information out. With the new way of determining if diamonds are real or fake, people can’t get scammed as easily. Although, the question is: how will people know. It’s not like everyone’s going to go around carrying an ultra violet light with them, but the problem of getting scammed is solved at least. Now scientists can tell the difference between fake and real. Maybe eventually they’ll sell hand-held ultra violet lights that ordinary people can own.
Here’s how it happened. It is a simple new technique. A rare form of blue diamond glows in the dark. After it has been put in ultra violet light it glows a bright red. This specific category of blue diamonds is called type llb. After absorbing high energy they glow from a blue, to a pink, and into a fiery red. These type llb diamonds are rather precious. One particular diamond called the Hope Diamond, glows up to a minute after lights surrounding have been turned of. Actually, scientists haven’t put much attention to these type llb diamonds at all until the recent discovery. These rare and very valuable diamonds have been a big help in the new discovery about diamonds.
