I'd doing questions 1,5 and 6.
Atoms want to be balanced as do the penguins in their environment. The things that changed the penguins environment is the water they were swimming in. The "aliens" dumped a bunch of trach in the water causing a penguin(love lace)to get stuck in one trash that is used for cans of soda or beer. That effected the way the pernguin lived. Soon enough the plastic got too tight around the neck and choked the penguin.
Humans play a big part in how the environment is changing. How the temperature goes up, animals hatching too late or too early. In this case, we changed the penguins environment by taking their fish and having them starve. We make the huggest changes with such little acts such as fishing and contaminating the environment the penguins were living in. Popuations are extremly important in this case. If there is a shortage on fish, then penguins die. If there is a low population of penguins then birds start to die because they rely on the penguins. That's how one population affected the other

Happy Feet

I thought that the movie was really cool and related to ecology. It was a good visual aid and that it was easy to understand. The movie shows how everything is related because it shows how one thing can dramatically effect and change a whole species. If you take away fish for example then you take away food for at least 2 species. Birds and penguins eat fish and is there is no fish then birds eat penguins and penguins die just because of some boat the whole food chain is messed up. Humans are one of the most responsible for any change because we are the dominant species and we can control things easily. If we take away a species food supply then we disrupt the food chain. It can be as little as a phone call stating that fishing is good in this region and bam problem.
Populations relate to each other like I said before. If there is a big demand of coral on the black market then you have people taking it from the coral reefs. This result will lead to fish dieing and or losing there homes that they have had for millions of years just because some rich guy wants something pretty.

I’m doing questions 1, 4, and 5.

In the movie Happy Feet, there were a lot of changes that happened in the penguin’s environment. One change in their environment was a food shortage. The penguins were running out of fish. They were running out because the “aliens” were fishing for them in huge nets. As a result of that there were less fish, so the penguins had little food.

Food webs are extremely important. If one thing goes wrong in a food web it affects everything usually in a negative way. One example of this that I saw in the movie was when the bird tries to eat the penguin. Usually birds eat fish, but since the humans were taking all their fish they had to find food else were. If birds ate all the penguins then what would normally eat penguins would go extinct from starvation, and what would normally eat that animal would die out eventually also if they couldn’t find another source of food.

There are many ways humans effect the environment. One way I saw in the movie was pollution in the water. “Love Lace” one of the penguins, got plastic packaging caught around his neck while swimming in the water looking for fish. The plastic packaging was choking him. Luckily he got it off, but he could have died. If lots of penguins got killed because of our pollution it could affect the food chain, which could also affect us.

I'm doing questions 1,5 and 6.

What changed in the peguins evironment was fish loss. The effects of this major food loss, is starving, dying. Not only that but all the stuff we put in the water. Like plastics, egg cartons and soda cans all this affect the way the penguins swim. They probably use to swim freely taking little caution of their predators now they got to watch out for everything.
Us humans play a huge role in the environment that penguins live in now. We pollute making it harder for the penguins to have a living space. I mean with all the ice caps melting. Not only that but fishing, we take away their food we starve them.
The different population related to each other is by if the fish is getting taken away the penguins have nothing to eat. Birds on the other hand have 2 things to eat but 1 one of them is being taken away (fish) so they rely on penguins which population is running out. Everything fits into each other.

Happy Feet Reflection

1. What changed in the penguins’ environment and what were the effects?

Lots of things changed in the penguins’ environment. The thing with the biggest impact was the lack of fish. Well, of course there is a long lasting effect if there is a lack of fish. Penguins begin to starve because there are no fish. Then all of the animals that thrive off of penguins begin to starve because there are no penguins and so on and so forth. But, on the bright side, humans get fish, but is starving animals worth it? Another thing that has changed the penguins’ environment is global warming. The snow is melting really fast. In the part of the movie when there is that huge avalanche, that probably has to do with that ice melting and just falling over. Other things that have changed the penguins’ environment is the immense amount of trash everywhere. Like the part when “Love Lace” gets the soda can holder caught around his neck. Imagine the effect of garbage! Penguins are dying because they don’t know what this litter is, then they get caught in it or eat it while looking for food, not knowing any better.

2. How does this movie show how everything is related to everything else?

Anything ever known to live has lived on this earth, and there is only and there is only ever going to be one earth. We all have to live on it and everything we do has an impact on someone else in one way or another. For example, if the United states where to completely litter and trash Europe, the people there would notice and probably would do something about it, probably not being to happy with us. That’s exactly what we do to the penguins, let alone the rest of the wild animals. The only difference is, the penguins can come over here and tell us that they don’t like what we’re doing. So, in this movie, it shows that us, as humans are completely affecting the penguins because we’re taking away their fish, bringing them into zoos and then melting all of the ice they live on with global warming. We are impacting them so much, and the penguins can’t even do anything about it.

3. How do food webs really work?

The food chain is supposedly very simple. It starts with green plants because green plants produce their own food with photosynthesis, then an animal eats that grass, then a bigger animal eats that animal and get the food from the animal it just ate and the grass it just ate, and so on until you reach the top were you would find humans. The thing is, if one little thing in this food chain in messed up, the entire system is screwed. For example, if there were no green plants, all of the animals that ate those plants would have any food and all of the animals that ate the animals that ate the grass would be screwed too.
*OBSERVATION: this is like the lady that swallowed the fly.
We really have to keep this system intact, because not only would the animals suffer but so would we.

"Happy Feet" Reflection
Questions 1, 5 and 6

The science behind Happy Feet made me think more about what the message was that the movie described. There were many scenes that discussed how different populations related to each other and how the change in the penguins’ environment affected the penguins. The movie also showed examples of humans’ impact on the environment, which led to impacts on the animals in the ecosystem. The movie was a very enjoyable way to learn about ecology and the environment.

What changed in the penguins’ environment and what were the effects?

One change in the environment that was portrayed in the movie was the decline in the population of the fish. This led to a series of events. The penguins depended on the fish for food, but since there were not enough fish to feed the hundreds of penguins, some of the penguins starved. The fish had also been the birds’ prey, but since there wasn’t enough, the birds started to hunt penguins. Since both populations wanted to eat a species that was diminishing, they had to fight for the fish. Another change that was shown in the movie was the “invasion” of humans into the Antarctic. Humans set up oil mines and polluted the water. This affected the penguins’ lifestyle in relationships. Mumble wanted to find out what the “aliens” were doing, but most of the other penguins wanted to just stay out of it. This caused division among the Emperor penguins, which led to worry and confusion. The changes in the penguins’ environment not only led to physical changes (starvation and pollution) but changes in relationships too.

How do humans have an impact on the environment?

Humans have an effect on the environment in many ways. Some of those are good, and some are bad. In the movie, it showed how humans are polluting and destroying the water. The penguin named Love Lace had plastic soda package around his neck. It was choking him, and he almost died! We are killing the most innocent creatures with hardly any defenses by throwing our plastic into the ocean. Another way that we influence the environment is that we are taking much more than our share in the fish supply. In the movie I saw an enormous net full of fish. The penguins were desperate for the fish, and we are taking it from right under their beaks! On the other hand, we have made a good impact on the environment. At the end of the movie, the humans got started debating about whether taking so much fish was such a good idea. They made changes and started to try and help the penguins and their environment.

How did the different populations in the movie relate to each other?

In Happy Feet, many different populations were represented. Some of these were Emperor penguins, killer whales, birds, elephant seals, humans, fish and Macaroni penguins. All these populations are related to each other. For example, the fish were the prey of the penguins and the birds. The penguins were the prey of the killer whales. Emperor penguins and Macaroni penguins are not related by eating each other, but by needs. They both needed the fish. The two groups of penguins had differences too. The Emperor penguins found mates by having a “heart song” and the Macaroni penguins make a nest of stones. If the population of the fish is reduced, the population of the penguins goes down as well. If the population of the penguins is small, then the killer whales will not have anything to eat, so they will die too. The different populations were represented by having different accents. This showed that in some ways they were separate, but in other ways they were in the same boat.

Seeing the movie Happy Feet through a different pair of eyes was really interesting. I was amazed about how truthful it actually was. In the movie, the people only acted upon the situation once they saw Mumble and the other penguins dancing. I real life, I do not think that this will happen. We need to do something about this condition now.

I'm doing 1,5 and 6.
It is good that the movie related to things that are going on today. The thing that changed the penguins was the fish. They are their only sorce of food. And they are disapering. Not good. The penguins are the only ones effected by the fish. Some birds are too, because they eat the fish. But they also eat baby penguins which are not getting the food they need and they die. The way humans impact the other anamlis life is by taking all the fish. Humans over fish areas and kill out other life forms by doing this. When we over fish we are making fish more scarece even to us humans. Most of the fish we catch we end up throwing away.We humans are putting things out of wack so we need to fix the problems we have cuased. Another thing is we must stop... GLOBALWARMING

Happy Feet Reflection

How is everything related to everything else?

One way it shows this is food chains. For example, a main part of the plot is that there is a food shortage for the penguins, the fish. Another example is that the penguins are always trying to stay away from the leopard. The main food chain in the movie basically goes like this: seals---------------penguins-------------------fish------------------krill. Although that seems like it covers a lot and most of the food chain of the Antarctic, it is only a very small piece. For example, the birds also try to eat baby penguins (in the movie there is a scene where 3 bird all try to eat Mumble). But, the birds aren’t at the top of the food chain. Humans capture the birds. Humans also capture the fish for food, which changes what the penguins have to eat. And there is where it all links together.

How do Humans impact the environment?

Humans make a very strong impact on the environment, as you see in Happy Feet. Humans take animals out of their homes, destroy food chains and make chaos of other species. They make a bad impact on the environment. In the movie, because the humans are fishing in that area, the penguins are suffering from it. Then, they start blaming Mumble for the fish famine, and he is banished. It makes his life miserable. Humans not only take resources, but pollute the environment. The things that is most addressed in the movie is littering. Because the humans are dumping waste into the waters, animals have to pay for it by possibly choking on it, or maybe getting caught in it for life. This happens to Loveleys. He gets a piece of plastic stuck around his neck and it eventually chokes him. There are consequences to what the humans do.

How do different populations relate to each other?

That could be asking many different things. It could be asking about food chains, or it could be asking about how different species interact with each other. What about penguins and elephant seals? It would normally be thought that the elephant seals were predators of the penguins. But in fact, they get along, as long as they both stay in their territory. It could also be the populations of the emperor penguins to the macaroni penguins. Even though they are the same animals, they are completely different. They live different cultures and lives. They even eat and mate different ways.

Happy Feet Reflection

Happy Feet really taught me about ecosystems and how different things are impacting the environment. I really enjoyed the film and never knew a cartoon about penguins could have such an impacts on me. I never have watched it in the perspective of science. I am answering questions 1, 3 and 5.

1) (Answer to question one) What changed in the Penguins’ environment and what were the effects?

In Happy Feet, many things changed the Penguins’ environment, leading to many different effects. One thing that was changing was the climate. In the movie, ice caps were cracking and breaking. In one scene, Mumble and his friends were basically sledding when a huge avalanche happened. They were almost crushed by this. Also, a crane fell into the water, letting out oil which leads to pollution. Speaking of pollution, there is so much pollution that in the movie, the penguin, “Love Lace” got a plastic soda can holder caught around his neck. It is just so dangerous for animals of all kinds because of the pollution. Another thing that changed in the Penguins’ environment was the sudden loss of fish. If the penguins don’t have enough food and starve, then the organisms that live off of penguins will starve. This cycle is the food web, and if one little section gets messed up, the whole web will get all messed up.

2) (Answer to question 3) How does the movie show that everything is related to everything else?

This movie was really clear about how everything is related to everything else. Of course, there is the food web, and the way in which I saw it was, birds eat the penguins because of the lack of fish, penguins eat the fish but are struggling, once again, because of the lack of fish. And while all of that is happening, all of the humans are enjoying their fish when they are not in high need of it. The penguins need it for energy and we need it for delicacy. We have other food. And if the penguins die out, the animals who live off of penguins die out, and so on. The key term here is Cause and Effect. Humans are, once again, related to penguins through pollution and, what might be, global warming. That is three ways that humans can kill the penguins. Is it worth it? Just so we can eat fish, not have to walk to a garbage can to throw away our trash (pollution) and driving everywhere(global warming)? In the environment, every organism links back to many organisms in different ways.

3) (Answer to question five) How do humans impact the environment?

Humans impact the environment in various ways. A few ways were shown in the movie. This was that humans are fishing so much, that the penguins do not have enough fish. This causes the penguins to die out, and that effects the whole food chain. Another way humans impact the environment is by polluting the water. In the movie, the penguin “Love Lace” had plastic from soda cans caught around his neck. This was eventually choking him. He almost died, but got it off. If this happens too much, even more penguins can die out, and once again, this effects the food chain.

HAPPY FEET

Questions 1,5 and 4

In the movie Happy Feet there were many things that changed in the penguin's environment. The major thing that did change was the shortage of fish, the penguin's main source of food. The penguins relied on the fish to keep them alive and not hungry. Human beings affected the amount of fish because of marine harvesting. Big boats come to the Arctic fishing and take a ton of fish from the ocean leaving not a lot for the penguins. Penguins are really affected by this being that fish is their main source of food. In the movie the penguins blamed mumble for his strange ways for the fish being gone. That was obviously not the real reason; people take other organisms resources without realizing that they are hurting not only that species/group but also all of the other organisms around them. Resulting in the food chain changing because without the penguins being able to eat, the other animals that eat the penguins won't be able to because the penguins could die from starvation. Other changes in the penguin's environment are that the ice is melting. This is caused by global warming/ pollution if global warming keeps on happening and growing than the penguins will no longer have a home.

Humans impact the environment in many ways. As shown in the movie the penguins were deeply affected by humans. The humans were taking the penguin's main food source: fish. They were doing this by marine harvesting. Another big thing that the humans do is called pollution. In the movie Love Lace (one of the penguins) was affected by pollution. Love Lace was swimming/fishing and in the ocean there were many things in the ocean that weren't supposed to be there that once belonged to humans. One of the things (plastic) got caught around the penguin's neck later causing the penguin to choke. Pollution can kill a lot of penguin and other living things, luckily Love Lace got the thing off that was around his neck but Love Lace had a high chance of dying if it wasn't going to come off. Not only does pollution from humans affect the penguins and other animals but it is also affecting us. We are making our environment worse and worse everyday from polluting the earth.

Food webs are very important to every single living organism. In the movie Happy Feet it showed just how important food webs are and what happens when things go wrong. When fish was scarce in the ocean and there was not a lot to eat at all other animals started looking for other things to eat. For example In the movie the birds usually eat fish and so do the penguins, there used to be enough food for both of those animals but since the fish was running low the birds started to try to eat the penguins. This caused the whole food web to go in different directions and have to eat different things. When food webs do change its usually a bad change not a good change.

Happy Feet was a really good movie and taught me a lot about ecology and how the food chain works. It also taught me a lot about the impact that humans have on the environment and other living things such as penguins. Over all I thought that this movie was really enjoyable but at the same time informative.

Reflection on Happy Feet

I am doing number 5 for those of you who are wondering.

Well for one the Humans impact the environment by a number of things. One of those things is pollution. Another thing on how humans impact the environment is fishing, whaling, etc.(what i mean by this is taking away food). Thats about the major things. That pollution changes the land of where animals and human beings live. Fishing , Whaling and etc. take away food from animals which breaks the food chain leaving them without food.

Now im doing number 4

How do Food Webs really work?Well its pretty simple let me explain. So theres a plant, that plant get energy from photosynthesis. Now one day a little bug/insect comes up and starts nibbling on that plant. Then after that say a little animal comes and eats that. Then a bigger animal eats that animal and so on. For a perfect example the penguins and hawks eat fish ,whales eat penguins but theres also humans in the food web the step in eating fish. They take that fish away from the penguins and hawks. It kind of hard to explain over the internet.

Now im doing number 1

What changed in the penguins environment? Well global climate change but the movie wasn't based on that. The main idea was that the Humans (A.K.A. ALIENS)were taking the penguins fish. That made it harder for the penguins to survive because that all they ate was fish.

Happy Feet

I'm doing questions 1,6, and 5

Numba 1(miss spelling intended): Well, some of the ice was melting, and that changed the penguins environment. But not much effects of that were shown... I mean there were scenes of ice caps melting and suddenly breaking, but you couldn't be sure if it was effecting the animals, more specifically the penguins. But of course, there was the fish, the soda can pack frames(Lovelace's sacred altar), and the big ice tractor thingy. Now, when the soda can pack frames are thrown into the water, it hurts penguins and apparently also gives them the power to convince other penguins they know everything, and are gods. I guess it sounds a little ridiculous. The fish made an effect when there weren't enough of them to feed the penguins...They also(just by the sheer power of their tasty looking features), seem to make birds have supernatural powers to carry fully grown penguins up at about an elevation of 100 feet and yet the penguin will survive that fall. And just for the record, I never knew that penguins could be invincible to large ship propellers. I guess I question kids movies more than I should eh?

Numba 5: The humans were being complete jerks by stealing those nice juicy fish. The penguins then couldn't eat and were forced to CANNIBALISM!!(Nah, just kidding) What really happened was that the penguins couldn't find enough fish and started to blame poor Mumble. Soon the penguins were getting desperate and kept praising the GREAT GUIN!! The soda can pack frames choked Lovelace and he couldn't breath for a while.

Numba 6: All of the species had certain populations. There were lots of penguins, a lot of elephant seals, a decent amount of birds, and no fish. So there were lots of penguins who needed fish, lots of birds who needed fish, and lots of elephant seals who eat kelp. So what happens, when, the fish run out? All the species don't have any food.

Practicly everyone misspelled on their comments. That's not good guys! :-)

Happy Feet Reflection...

Im doing Quesions 1,5 and 6.
What changed in the envirement was that at first their were lots of fish in the ocean and all of the penguins had lots of fish to eat. And then when the "Aliens" came, they would throw trash into the water which would get stuck on to the penguins [Love lace]. Which would most of the times kill them.
Then Envirement is changing a lot, First, How the weather is getting warmer and warmer every year. And everybody has been noticing that we are not getting much snow in the winter. Such of our small acts can affect out world soo much. Like if we stopped fishing as much, which could keep arctic animals alive. And for the final question, The population is extremely important in our case. If their are any shortage of fish, the penguins die. And if their are no fish or penguins, the birds start dying because they have no food to survive on. And that is how the population can affect others.

Unknown said...

Im doing question one three and four. 1.) what changed the penguins enviorment and what are the affects? One of the things that changed there enviorment was the humans over fishing there homes so then there weren't enough fish for them to eat the population will get smaller and then other populations like the birds will get smaller because there aren't enough penguins and fish to eat and then what is normally eaten by the birds (besides the penguin and fish) there population will get bigger because there is nothing regularly eating them. 3.) How does the movie show everything is related to everything else? Well like I said before about the food chain if one species/population gets smaller than normal than the species regularly depending on it for food will get smaller because there is not enough food. Also the the animals getting eating by the first species there population will get bigger because there is nothing regularly eating them. 4.)How do food webs really work? well I think that when a species get bigger or smaller it will effect the species it's preying on and the species preying on it because when the species gets bigger the species it's preying on will get smaller and the species preying on it will get bigger and vice versa.

Questions: 4, 5 and 6.

How do food webs worked? In the movie, Happy Feet, a lot happened that had to do with the food web. The food web is all about how some living things rely on other living things to be their food or dinner. There are two examples in this movie that I happened to notice. One part was when the seal was chasing the penguin (Mumble) so it could have food to eat. Therefore, seals eat penguins, and then, in the movie, penguins eat fish. All the penguins rely on the the number of fish. If there is a shortage of the food the following problem could be caused.

How did the different populations effect each other? In the movie, the penguin’s major problem is that there is a shotage in the fish. If this continued, the population of penguins would lower, and then the seal’s ( that rely on the penguins) population would lower. There are many different populations of animals shown in different parts of the movie. There were penguins, fish, seagul, whales, seals, sea lions, etc. shown in the film. Most of them depend on each other, and if one is effected, it causes another to be effected. The next questions is all about how humans make a hug impact on the lives and environment of penguins in the movie.

How do humans impact the environment? The humans made a huge impact on the environment, by changing it in many ways. Some ways were expressed through the following parts of the movies. One, is when pollution caused by the humans (who were considered “aliens”) is shown in the water. The same water that is a part of the animal’s environment and where penguins (like Mumble) go to catch fish and swim. It even showed that one of the penguins (named Lovelace) had a piece of garbage wrapped around his neck, that had gotten caught when he was only swimming. A huge impact made was when it showed where all the fish that the penguins rely on for food and to live, were being taken by the humans. This goes back to the change in population. This can cause the penguin’s population to lower, and then etc.
