ELK
by pie82

The elk movie had a lot to do with the changes in population. The wolves were hunting them, and the population of the elks were going down. The elk didn't use to have to worry about the elk for about 75 years, but they came back and starting hunting on the elk. Their population was also changing because they could not reproduce as well because they weren't eating as much. One of the scientists wass following their diet, making sure that they were eating the right foods. Trophic levels, feeling levels, and energy levels were also mentioned. Elk are probably almost at the top of the trophic levels, so they would need to eat more because they are getting less energy from their food, but they can't find any food, and they are tired because they don't have enough energy to hunt for food. The wolf are higher than the elk on the food chain and on the trophic levels, so the wolf have to eat more, and more elk. So their population is starting to be effected.

These movies were all about ecology. We learned about different topics within ecology. Each of these movies had to do with ecology in a different way. The first movie about Elk and wolves was more about

Elk/wolves movie------ This movie was mostly about a predator and prey. That falls into many of these categories because it’s about one living organism eating other and getting energy from it. The movies start out in Yellow Stone National Park, where a few people from the Ecology department of Montana State University are studying the elk and their habits. The elk used to be able to roam freely without any trouble. But then wolves were re-introduced to the park and now the elk have to try and hide. There is a good example of changes in population, the wolves died out because we hunted them. Then the elk were able to be free without any trouble because of the lack of population of wolves. Now that the wolves have come back, they need to hide and be more careful when walking around. Why do they have to hide because the wolves, obviously, because want to eat them. There is and example of food webs and food chains. As a way to protect themselves from the wolves, the elk travel in small groups as a way to guard themselves from the wolves.

Grizzly Bear movie----- This movie had a lot to do with determining population size. It takes place in Glacier National Park, also known as “The Crown of the Continent”. He we would find the specie called the Grizzly Bear. A very long time ago, Grizzly Bears were found almost everywhere in the United States, there are now only one percent of the bears there used to be. They wanted to identify the amount of bears in the area, so they needed DNA. For bears, you don’t need to actually go up to a bear and take a sample of their flesh to get their DNA, you just need a sample of their fur. To get the fur they made a concoction of aged cattle blood and fish juice (BLECH!!!!!!!!!!!!) with drew the bears into the trap and the scientists got samples of their fur. They estimated that there were about two hundred bears left and because of the study, we now know that there are about four hundred Grizzly Bears in the western area.

Elk And Wolves

The elk and the wolves weren’t really in harmony. The wolves had been away for 75 yrs and now that they are back they are causing havoc for the elk. Before the wolves the elk were just minding there own business eating some grass and then the population changed drastically in a bad way. The way the wolves get their energy/food is through the elk. We have some ways of determining the population size. We can put gps collars that fall off after about 4 months. This is good because we can see where they have been and where they have moved to, to get away from the wolves. When the wolves came they upset everything. Including the elks stomachs, they do this because when the wolves are present the elk still eat but they don’t rest. Resting time is when they regurgitate their food, which is necessary for the elk properly digest their food. This example has a lot to do with food chains, food webs and trophic levels. Food chain: wolves eat elk the wolves are high man on the totem pole so they eat the lesser. Food webs because the wolves don’t only eat elk and elk don’t only get eaten by wolves. It also includes trophic levels because the elk are like the herbivores and the wolves are like the 2nd level carnivores which eat the 1st level carnivores and the herbivores. One way the elk are changing their ways is they are not going into open fields where they are easy prey instead they are hiding the denser forest parts of their community so they can blend in easier.

Ecology Study

In class, we have been studying ecology. We have learned about seven different topics. Those topics are…
1) Biotic and Abiotic Factors
2) Levels of Organization
3) Feeding Levels/Energy Levels
4) Food Chains/Food Webs
5) Trophic Levels
6) Determining Population Size
7) Changes in Population Size
We watched a movie addressing ecology. It was about Elk and Wolves which address these seven topics. This movie takes place in Yellow Stone National Park where three people from the Ecology department of the University of Montana are studying the relationship between the elk and wolves. The elk used to be alone in this park and be able to go around without the danger of their prey, the wolf. Now that the wolves have moved into the park, the elk are starting to behave differently in many ways. In the Elk and Wolves movie, all of these topics were addressed.

1) Things that were related to abiotic and biotic factors were climate, seasons, wolves and elk (predator and prey). Climate and season are both abiotic factors because they are nonliving factors of the environment and the elk and wolves are biotic factors because they are predators and prey. The wolves feed on the elk and the elk is the prey of the wolves so therefore, they are alive which means that they are biotic factors.

2) Things that were related to levels of organization in the movie were a lack of a movement towards balance which resulted in disorder. The elk were fine until the wolves came and started hunting and feeding off of the elk, which created problems in many ways; energy was being lost and the elk were malnourished. The wolves were causing the elk to move out of the community.

3) Things that were related to feeding levels/energy levels in the movie were the change in diet of the wolves because they were just beginning to eat the elk. This affects the elk’s behavior because they are looking around too much that they are not getting enough sleep which leads to lack of energy, deaths and not healthy reproduction because of a lack of energy. With the absence of the wolves, the elk could go about their business in a way that was ideal in terms of getting food and being more nourished. With the wolves present, elk may have to behave differently in ways that are not ideal with the respect of feeding themselves but are necessary for not being the prey of wolves. Without elk on the food chain, the whole thing would get messed up.

4) Things that are related to food chains/food webs in the movie were shown many times. The wolves eat the elk, which is part of a food chain, which than makes a food web. Without elk, because of their lack of energy, the energy flow would slow, and the food web and chain would be greatly affected.

5) Things that are related to trophic levels in the movie was how energy was lost and stored and what ate what. The elk could probably serve as herbivores and the wolves could probably serve as first level carnivores (although I am not sure if the elk eat plants of other animals). When the wolves eat the elk, they are receiving less energy than what the elk had from the plants it ate. Herbivores get the second most amount of energy and the first level carnivore gets the third most amount of energy because energy is lost each step of the way in trophic levels.
*NOTE: I am not quite sure if this statement (about what trophic levels the elk and wolves are on) is correct but this is an inference that I am making.

6) Things in the movie that were related to determining of population size were a limit to growth. There is a limit to growth because of the predator, the wolf. Also, the three factors of how populations grow are number of births, number of deaths and the movement in and out of a habitat. There are fewer births, because of the lack of energy. There are more deaths, also, because of the lack of energy and there is more movement out because the elk are attempting to avoid the wolves. This is linked to the three characteristics in determining the population.
1) Geographic distribution: the elk are separating into small groups and moving to places where there are fewer wolves.
2) Density: because the elk are moving, the population is less dense in most places where they once were.
3) Growth: because of the lack of energy, the elk are not reproducing well.
There is a limit to growth because of the predator, the wolf.

7) The changes in population size in this movie are linked to population density. The population of elk in Montana is getting much less dense because elk are traveling in small groups, trying to avoid the wolves. They are separating and dying because they have no energy. They are also lacking reproduction because of this energy loss.

Overall, the elk are greatly affected by this change. They are getting eaten and loosing energy. Loosing energy leads to death and a lack of reproduction. I truthfully never knew how much a predator can affect the prey not by eating them. The elk are loosing energy because of looking around and avoiding the wolves. I also thought it was cool that they tracked elk by putting collars (tracking devices) on the elk. I really thought this was interesting!

Both the movie about elk and the movie about bears related to the seven topics that we have learned about this unit. Those topics included biotic and abiotic factors, levels of organization, feeding levels/ energy levels and trophic levels. We also learned about food chains and webs and determining changes in populations. These movies brought what we have learned to the real world and have helped me understand how they are related.

In the grizzly bear movie, researchers were studying the bears at Glacier National Park. One of the biggest topics was the study of the population of the bears and their movement. In the movie, population density was discussed. There was a higher density of bears in Glacier Park because of its good protection. A fact mentioned in the movie was, that prior to Europeans coming to America, the grizzly bear population ranged from the United States, up to the Arctic and down to Mexico. They are now reduced to one percent of their original population size. I realized that this meant that we were a limiting factor to the grizzly bear growth, either because of hunting or because of using up their space and pushing them to the edge of their limits. The researchers were trying to study the bears’ population by using non-invasive techniques. Part of their study was to collect data on the immigration and demogration of the bears. Because of Glacier National Park’s large population of grizzly bears, there is the biggest chance of long-term survival there. Co-existing with the bears is extremely important, because if we don’t, the bears may become extinct over time. This is an example of organisms competing with each other for space. If the grizzly bears become extinct, the food pyramid could then be disrupted, which would lead to a series of chain events affecting many other species.

The movie on elk and wolves also had a lot to do with the main topics in ecology. There is a lot of concern about how the wolves affect the elk in many ways. Researchers studied the predator/prey relationship and the elks’ behavioral responses and consequences to the wolves. This brought the relationship between biotic factors to a real situation. In the movie, the elk could get a little bit closer to their biotic potential without the wolves being at Yellowstone. When the wolves returned to the park they acted as a big limiting factor to the elk.

The wolves were second level consumers, so they ate the elk, who were first level consumers. I saw pictures of the elk eating grass and plants. Grass and plants are the producers at the bottom of the food pyramid. The researches said that this situation was strange because the normal predator/prey interactions did not seem to apply. For example, the elk are trying to avoid the wolves by staying in smaller groups and being in places that are harder to locate. They also used different parts of their environment and landscape. The elk’s habits changed dramatically when the wolves came back. They spent less time resting while they were grazing. Without resting they cannot regurgitate their food properly and therefore not digest things properly. This results in a less healthy diet which may lead to the elk reproducing less well.

In both movies, the elk, wolves and grizzly bears were part of a population, community, ecosystem, biome and biosphere. They were made up of organs, tissues, cells, organelles and molecules. I think that in the movies there were hints of topics in ecology everywhere. The only difference was that instead of learning about them in a textbook, we learned about them in different situations in real life.

Elk
By Doo Da Dee

This description is from the video on Elk and wolves. This occurs in Yellow stone park/ Montana.

Biotic and abiotic factors: The factors are season, climate, elk, wolves. The abiotic factors are the season and the climate. They both effect the elk and wolves and are nonliving organisms. The biotic factors are the elk and the wolves. The elk and the wolves are living things so therefore they are biotic.

Food web/Food chain: The food chain was shown lots of times. The food chain is elk eats grass and the wolves ate the elk. The food web is the smaller amount of elks aka (wolf food) means less energy for the wolves to gain. You could just call it a mess.

Changes in population size: Elk spend a lot of their energy on the lookout for wolves so they don’t eat properly (problem). With less energy to spare they don’t reproduce (problem). Another reason is because they are being hunted down by wolves (problem).

Trophic levels: In the movie it showed how energy was lost by the elk. The way that happens will be explained here. The elks are eating enough food but are not eating it properly. They lose energy when running away from the wolves and when they do not relax because of the wolves.

Levels of organization: When the wolves came they put every thing in a up roar. The wolves caused the elk to separate into small groups and make them selves harder to find. Now the elk are really edgy and don’t eat correctly.

Feeding levels/Energy levels: They are eating enough but they are not digesting properly. They are all ways awake and looking for a safe place to graze. Why did the wolves come. Why!

Determining population size: In the movie the way they determine the elk population is the movements they track down in the GPS devises.

One of the reasons I care is because if the elk were fine I wouldn’t be writing this. Another elks look cool!

ELK AND WOLF MOVIE
by GreenMango
In the movie called “The Most Ancient Game”, about the elk and the wolves, the 7 topics we have been studying with ecology were shown. The most clear were food chains and webs, feeding and energy levels abiotic and biotic factors, and changes in population size.
Abiotic and biotic factors were shown in the movie mostly in a few different ways. They took poop samples (abiotic factors) from the elk (biotic factor). Also, the elk at an abiotic factor as their food (trees, flowers, grass, etc). The wolves were introduced into the area (biotic factor).
Levels of organization was shown in terms of population, ecosystem, and community. The elk population was there first, then the wolves got introduced to make a community. The wolves ate the elk, which made it an ecosystem.
Food chains and webs were shown very strongly in the movie. The most obvious was that the wolves at the elk, that the elk ate the grass(plants), and that the plants got its energy from photosynthesis. Since other things eat the elk, and the elk eats other things, they are part of a food web. The same goes for the wolves. Also, because the wolves were taken out of the food chain for 75 years, the whole chain shifted. Now that they were put back in, all the other animals need to readapt.
With the wolves present, feeding and energy levels were definitely there. For example, for the elk, with the wolves preying on them, there is less time for rest which means a less healthy diet. If the elk have less healthy diets then there will be less elk. Also, if there is less time to rest then there is less time to regurgitate their food and digest it properly. In that case, they won’t get as much energy.
Elks are on a higher trophic level than the wolves because they are herbivores. This is how Trophic Levels were shown in “The Most Ancient Game”. The elk eat plants, which makes them herbivores, which makes them on the 2nd highest trophic level. The wolves are 1st level carnivores, which makes them the 3rd highest trophic level. Lastly, the grass that the elks eat are the highest trophic level, because they produce the energy.
It wasn’t as obvious, but determining population size was also in the movie. It was shown by the density of the elk population. For example, because the elk are always being preyed on now, the population is less dense than in places it used to be very heavy in. Also, the elk are more separated and grouped to protect them selves from the wolves so that affects the geographic distribution. Lastly, the elk can’t grow as much because: a) the elk don’t have as much time to breed because they are protecting themselves, and b) the wolves are eating them.
The last of the 7 topics was Changes in Population Size. It was shown mostly because of the GPS systems. They can track where the elk go because of a GPS collar, and that could also explain changes. The elk population will change by shrinking, and the wolf population will change by growing.
In conclusion, all 7 of the ecology topics we have been learning about have been clearly shown in this movie.

During science, we’ve been examining and studying ecology. We watched two movies on ecology. The first movie was on Elk and Wolves and the second was on Bears. The Elk and Wolf movie cover these seven topics;[sorry, I couldn't find the last one!]

Trophic Levels [my group did this!]
Food Chains/Food Webs
Levels of Organization
Feeding Levels/Energy Levels
Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Determining Population Size
Changes in Population Size

In this documentary, what these scientists were doing took place in Yellow Stone National Park. Three people from the Ecology department of the University of Montana started studying what relationship the elk and wolves have. The elk used to be able to be alone and roam around without any worries about being prey of another animal, in this case being the wolf. After 75 years of being care-free, the wolves have come back to the park and they seek food. After all these wolves started to come in, the elk started to go all over the place and acting strangely, that’s what these scientists are trying to figure out.

Trophic Levels
Trophic levels in the movie was how energy was lost and stored and what ate what. In this food web the elk would be considered a herbivore, which would be eaten by a wolf, who is a first level carnivore in this web.

Food Chain/Food Webs
Food chains/food webs in the movie were explained and shown in many different ways. The wolves moved in and now they consume the elk, which happen to be a part of a food chain, leading to a food web. But since there happens to be a lack of elk because of their low energy, the wolves population would decline and the whole food web would be effected pretty bad.

Levels of Organization
As we have learned, either things are balanced or they are in disorder, which leads to death. This is related to the levels of organization. For 75 years, the elk were fine until the wolves came and started to prey on the elk, which lead to disorder, leaving the elk worried about where they were going to eat without being eaten which lead the elk to be malnourished. This affected the population and the environment of they elk, which forced the elk to move out and try not to be eaten.
Feeding Levels/Energy Levels

The wolves started to move in and consume the elk and this affected how the elk’s reaction in many ways. Now, the elk have to move around too much which doesn’t give them much time to sleep. This lack of sleep leads to a very low amount of energy, death[disorder],and a very unhealthy reproduction of elk. When the wolves weren’t in the park, the elk could live more at peace and could get enough food to eat and have enough time to sleep and have a much healthier reproduction. But since the wolves moved in, the elk needed to start to adapt to their new environment with them and change their diets. If this were to continue, the elk would eventually become extinct and then there wouldn’t be anymore elk left and the whole food chain involving them would collapse.

Aboitic and Biotic
The things that are related to abiotic and biotic factors is the seasons, climate, elk and of course the wolf. The abiotic factors are climate and season because they are not alive;the biotic factors were the elk and wolves because the elk was the prey and the wolf was the predator. The wolves need food so in order to survive, which in this case, happen to be the elk, making the elk a prey. This proves that they are biotic factors.
Population Size
The changes in population size is very much linked to the population density. Now that the elk are moving in smaller groups then before to places where wolves are less likely to be seen around. They are separating and dying because of constant moving around because of the lack of sleep which causes them to have less energy to move and escape wolves.

Population Growth
Population growth is changing a lot and in many ways. The wolves have invaded the living space of the elk. The wolves now search for food and for the elk’s misfortune, they are the only food around. The wolves eat the elk which limit their population. These wolves are now called “limiting factors”. They hunt down and reduce the elk’s population. There are 3 main terms that are related to population growth.
Growth: because they are being prey, the elk have a low amount of energy to search for food and reproduce efficiently.
Geographic distribution: the elk are leaving in groups of 3-4 to places where there is most likely to be more food and less wolves roaming around.
Density: because of the geographic distribution, there is less density in the places where elk used to be in.

Ecology Essay.

In class we watched two movies addressing the topic ecology. Before this we learned about all of the different topics within ecology, the topics were, biotic and abiotic factors, levels of organization, feeding levels/energy levels, food chains/food webs, Trophic levels, determining population size and lastly changes in population size. Both of these movies had to do a lot with the topics that we learned about in school. The movie that I chose to write about was the Elk/wolf movie.

In the Elk movie a lot of things were related/had to do with abiotic and biotic factors. Those things were wolves, elk, climate and seasons. The Elk and the Wolves are both biotic factors, they are living organisms that are predator and prey. The Wolves eat the Elk’s therefore making the Elk’s the prey and the wolves the predators. The climate and the seasons are abiotic factors because they are non-living factors that help the biotic factors to survive.

Levels of organization also related to the Elk and the Wolves. The Wolves were hunted out for 75 years and all of the sudden they come back causing the Elk’s to imbalance. The Elk’s did not have to worry about being prey of the wolves but now since the wolves are back the Elk’s are forced to live in different places and eat different foods trying to get away form the wolves. This caused balance disorder and malnutrition in the Elk’s resulting in very little energy in the Elk’s lives. They were lacking Hemostats (movement towards balance).

Feeding/energy levels related to this movie because the diet changed in the wolves and in the Elk’s. When the wolves came back their diet changed because they started to eat the elk. The Elk were trying to hide from the wolves but were staying alert at all times resulting in a loss of sleep which results in a low energy level. With very low energy the elk’s reproduce less well. The Elk’s didn’t have time with the wolves watching them to digest their food properly causing them no be malnourished. This sometimes caused Elk to die, which could lead to no elk in the food chain resulting in the food chain getting messed up.

There were many things in the movie that related to food chains and food webs. The wolves eat the elk and the elk eat plants. This is a food chain. They are also part of a food web. If all of the elk died out then the food chain would be a lot different and kind of messed up, the energy flow would also change in a bad way making everything go slower.

The elk and the wolves are related to trophic levels in many ways. The wolves are first level carnivores that eat herbivores (which are elk) *I’m not sure if elk eat other things besides plants* the elk are the herbivores that eat plants, which are part of the grazing food chain. The Elk, wolves and plants are 1st level and 2nd level consumers. Since the elk were in the presence of the wolves they weren’t able to digest the plants properly causing malnutrition in the elk resulting in the elk consuming less energy.

The population of elk decreased a lot from the wolves’ presence, the elk were moving to places where people couldn’t track them and neither could wolves. They were also having a great loss in energy resulting in less reproduction. These were the changes in population size.

People were determining the elk’s population size by having a GPS around the elk’s neck that had a tracker on it. It allowed the people to know where the elk’s where every two hours for a couple of weeks or months.

In the end I learned a lot about ecology and elk and wolves and how they are greatly affected by the wolves presence. I also liked relating everything we learned about ecology to the movies that we watched.

A few days ago we watched movies about ecology. One was about Elks, and the other was about Grizzly bears. They both had to do with ecology.

The movie we watched about Elks had to do with the food chain, trophic levels, and determining population size. The study took place in Yellow stone National park. Elks lived in harmony for 75 years until recently wolves started to come back to Yellow stone National Park. Wolves pray on Elks. When the wolves came back to the park Elk's population started to go down. They also stopped reproducing as much because they weren't eating as much. Elks need to eat a lot because they are near the top of the food chain, which means they don't get a lot of energy since only 10% is transferred. Overall the wolves are beginning to make a impact on Elk's population.

The movie we watched about Grizzly Bears was mainly about population size and their movement. Researchers were studying Grizzly Bears at Glacier National Park and wanted to find out how many Grizzly bears lived there. They set traps to get the bears DNA. They set the traps by wrapping stapled bob-wire around trees at the park and put a mix of aged cattle blood and fish on the wires so that when bears rubbed themselves in it their hair would get caught on the staples. Then the scientists took the hair back to their lab to grind it up and take a closer look at their DNA.

I'm doing the movie with Elk and Wolves. It's in Yellow Stone National park-Montana.

The Biotic and Abiotic things in this movie are: Elk, Wolves, and the plants the Elk eat are all biotic.
Water, seasons, temprature, and the terrain are abiotic.

Feeding/Energy Levels, Trophic Levels and Food Chains/Webs: These are related to the movie because the wolfs hadn't been there for 75 years and now that they were the elk had to change a lot of their habits.
One thing that changed was that even though they always had to be watching for wolves the elk ate they same amount but didn't have the time they needed to thoroughly chew and digest their food. Because of that they became malnourished and more disease prone, so they died more limiting the wolves food source.
In food chains the plant are the producers, the elk are first level consumers (herbivores), and the wolves are second level consumers.

Population size/Change in Population size: In the movie the elk aren't used to the wolves so they don't have time to rest or digest their food properly (see section on food web/chains) and become malnourished. Because they're malnourished they die from diseases and not as many elk are born. Add that to the fact that they are being hunted by wolves the population is going down.

I really liked the way we presented these topics. It was a great, fun, easy way to learn and it was also good practice to teach. This way you were really able to make sure you learned your own subject because you could judge how much you knew. I’ve always heard tht you know if you know something by being able to make some one else know it.

I learned a lot about all these topics through this teaching system like Trophic Levels, Food Chains, Determining Population, Change in Population, Levels of Organization, Biotic and Abiotic Factors and Feeding/Energy Levels. I learned how all of these cycles, processes, and things keep us alive in different ways like Biotic and Abiotic Factors. I was taught that we depend on abiotic factors such as the sun to keep biotic factors such as plants alive. The plants might be eaten by herbivores an the herbivores might be eaten by 1st level consumers thus passing 10% of energy to each one from each thing consumed. I acquired that knowledge when we learned about Trophic Levels as well as food/energy chains. When they take the energy and the organism is not consumed they later die and decompose but that energy is not lost because it is taken by scavengers and decomposers, that energy later goes back into all of those cycles of nature. When things die, they don’t just affect where energy goes they change population, there are actually lots of ways to change a population’s size. I acquired this information from the changes in population and determining a populations size presentations.

I found it so easy to retain all this information when we were doing this in a fun way.

Video number one the elk and the wolves:

Well the video said that since the returns of the wolves to yellow stone park the number of elk has decreased so that is the same to changes in population because the energy is transferred in each level. Also obviously the wolves eat the elk and the elk eat some kind of green plant so those are trophic levels. Because of the wolves the elk are not taking enough time to digest the food properly so they will have to higher there feeding levels to get enough energy from the food that they are eating so obviously those are feeding le. Again the wolves eat elk and the elk eat plants so that is also a food chain.

Video number two the Grizzly bears:

In the video it said that grizzlies have reduced to 1 percent of there original range so that is changes in population size because there population is getting smaller. They said that in the video they use barbed wire to analyze there DNA but I think they also said that they could also see how many there were so that has to do with determining population size because there seeing how many grizzlies there are in the glacier park. Well the environment is the glacier park so it is wooded and has obviously glaciers.

Elk and Wolves movie.

Well i saw a lot of stuff in population size and food chains/webs.
The population of the elk was decreasing because the wolves were eating all of the them also the population was decreasing because the elk (i think) weren't eating the right food or something like that so it was harder for them to live. Also it said something about reproduction being slow so it was harder for the population to grow if the reproduction is slow. In food chains well its pretty simple because food chains/webs connect to feeding levels/energy levels and also trophic levels. So the elk are eating the grass while the wolves eat the elk so in this i think the elk would be 1st level consumers( i think). Also this has to do with levels of organization because in the levels of organization theres population and also community and the community of the elk have to keep safe and not get eating by the wolves. This is about all i have to say so.

Ecology movies

Elk Yellow Stone National Park Movie
This movie was about how for a long time wolves were not a predator to the elk. Although after 75 years, the wolves were reintroduced into their environment and the elk did not respond well. First, the wolves turned into a limiting factor as the predator, which hunted and decreased the elk population. Next the elk’s density went down and they traveled in small groups instead of larger groups. Since the elk tried to avoid the wolves in smaller groups it makes it harder for wolves and people to find them, creating limited research on their new behavior.

Grizzly Bear/Glacier National Park Movie
In this movie, they tried to identify the size of the Grizzly Bear population. They would take barbwire and connect it around a few trees to make a circle or square inside. They would then put something to lure the Grizzly Bear there, and when it left, they would collect the hair that was caught on the barbwire. Since the hair contains DNA, they would extract the DNA and that way they could keep track of how many Grizzly Bears there are by getting as much different DNA as possible. If the same bear returned, they would know because of the DNA. Grizzly Bears once lived in most of North America now they live in 1% of that area.
