- “Burnishing Halo” by Rachel Rosmarin on Google Sci/Tech news
- This article was about the crazy fans that “desperately need” Halo 3, and how good it is.
-I thought this article was interesting. I did like this article because it was very well written and explained well also on why all the gamers want Halo 3. I wasn’t surprised to here that everyone wanted it because I’ve heard that all the other halo’s are extremely good and fun. But, I was surprised when I heard that people would quit there jobs just so they could buy one game at midnight or go there early in the morning just for a game. Some people are just so crazy about video games. I do not have any questions about this article or know more about what I read.

Hey, Mr. Ardito. I got this article from the website you recommended, www.pageflakes.com. You can get to this article by typing in...

http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20070919/Feature1.asp

Science Report
I think this article was very interesting. This article was about how when you have caffeine it can be good and also bad for you.
This article caught my eye the most from all the other articles because I never knew caffeine can be both good and bad for you. I think this article was surprising to me because I knew that you get more awake by having caffeine but this article has much more information then just that. Today I liked reading this article because it did not get me bored and I liked to hear that information. I learned that caffeine raises the amount of sugar in your blood stream even if there is no sugar in your caffeine drink. Another thing I learned is people use coffee because it makes them alert and it makes them alert because caffeine is in the coffee. Athletes also have caffeine because it gets them more pumped up and more energy for a game or practice. One question I have is can a person get really addicted to caffeine if they drink it in a lot of drinks and they have caffeine a lot?

Hi Mr.A I could not figure out the link to the article so I will hand it to you next class- Kate West

The article I read was about DNA extracted from woolly mammoth’s hair. The article spent a lot of time talking about how the scientists thought that they would get the best DNA samples from the bones or muscles of woolly mammoth remains. They did not know until they tried to get DNA from the remains of woolly mammoth hair that it would have so much information. One thing that I thought was really interesting was how the scientists used to have to take as long as six years to figure out a genome sequence, and now with new technology it takes five minutes. The scientists described that the information is protected by the hair shaft as though it was like biological plastic.

Feathered Fossils
By Emily Sohn

This article is about Velociraptor or Mongoliensis fossil with bumps on the forearm. These bumps were to have feathers in them. The connection of the feathers in the bumps. Some birds have these Quill Knobs. It did not let the dinosaur fly. It didn’t even let it glide like the Microraptor, its cousin. It’s possible that these feathers could have helped the dinosaur shield its eggs from the sun light or protect them from hungry predators. Scientists also suggest they could have been used for changing direction quicker and leap higher suggest scientist.
I think this was a very interesting article that I would like to learn more about. I think that the author could have talked more about the raptor’s relation with birds and the feathers on the raptor. I also think that she could have written more information.
I think it was a good article and I recommend it to anyone reading this report.

Space Sickness?

Scientists are puzzled, over the period of last weekend a meteorite crashed ino the Andean plane in the southern area of Peru. That much is easy to explane, what is strange however is that the meteorite has been releasing fumes that hace caused the illness of 200 people so far.
The scientists in this article explained that the meteorite crashed into sodden ground leaving an extremely muddy crater and that the mud boiled for ten minutes. Could it be the fumes from the boiled mud or some space plague? The scientists exclaimed that the 200 people suffering from the “disease” had symptoms of headaches, nausea, and respiratory problems from the crater of mud 65ft. long and 15ft deep.
I believe that the disease was caused by both the meteorite and the mud. The elements in the meteorite heated as they were, when combined with the mud let off space fumes that could cause the sickness as the did the boiling mud was mixed with some of the elements from the meteor and thats what caused the fumes. The meteorite was a key part, heating the mud wouldn’t have done it alone.

Dengue Fever Surges in Latin America
By MICHAEL MELIA,
AP

I found this article at http://news.aol.com/

I thought the article I read was very interesting. It talked about a disease called Dengue Fever which is a disease that is spread by mosquitoes. In Latin America more people than normal are catching it and some of the people are dieing.
I thought it was a bit weird at how the disease has been around for a while and the countries in Latin America are just noticing it. It sort of shows you how the governments and countries only pay attention to the big things and not the little things that may become big. I thought it was an o.k. article. It wasn’t written very well; when I read a few of the captions from the pictures some of the sentences said the same thing as the captions. It was sort of repetitive like they were trying to fill up space. Besides that it was a good article and it got right to the point and said only facts and quotes there weren’t really any opinions only in the quotes.
It interested me that in some countries like Mexico they wanted to get rid of the mosquitoes that carried it in high tourist areas like Cancun so that tourist would keep coming and would not be scared of the disease.
Some questions that I have are: Where did the disease first originate? Why isn’t there a vaccine for it if people are so afraid of it? Why didn’t countries act earlier on when it was growing?

Wow, that article was a bit longer than it looked when I typed it on word. :|

chew for health
by: Emily sohn
i got this website at..
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20070404/Feature1.asp

When i read this article i was pretty surprised because i would defenetly think that chewing gum is defenetly NOT allowed... Some scientist say "chewing gum may be good for your health, It may even help boost your test scores" I was so supriesed when i read this my mouth siriously fell onto the floor.in the meantime, companies are also experimenting with adding vitamins, minerals, medicines, and other substances that could give gum the power to cure headaches and fight everything from serious diseases to bad breath!!! But some gums contain an ingredient that fights tooth decay. Chewing also stimulates production of saliva, which washes away cavity-causing bacteria.

if you want to check it out its really interesting!!

Reflection

I think that the experience was fine. I did not mind it at all. My mom already knew what it was so she helped me out with it.
Thing that went wrong was me trying to explain it to her. She helped me faze it better. What went right was the fact that she actually understood what I was trying to say to her.
What I learned about this experience is a better the meaning of the word homeostasis or explanation of the word, and that I need to work on my explanations for different words.

cire,

WOW!!! You wrote alot of information, it was hard to keep up with it all. I thought it was very good and it seems like you put a lot of time and effort into it. Your summary was very big and descriptive along with your reflection. =]

1. It was really cool explianing Homeostasis.
2. It worked sort of because i couldn't read my notes so i re-wrote them and i was able to explian it better.
3. I learned more because i re-wrote my notes but my mom didn't know much about it.
4. I have more information because i re-wrote my notes and i went to wikipedia to look for more information but i found were you got the information.

For my group’s project we said that the best paper airplane meant the plane that flew the farthest distance. Every one in my group decided together that we each would make our own plane that we thought would fly the farthest, and since there were only three people in my group we could all put in our best plane. When we did our tests in the gym we decided to measure the whole distance of the gym so then when we flew our planes all we would have to do was measure the distance from our plane to the opposite end of the gym and subtract that from the measurement of the whole gym. We each took five turns and measured all of our distances in centimeters. After that we had to average our scores and figure out which of our three planes flew the farthest. The three people in my group were me (plane name –Mildred), Gabe (plane name-My Plane), and Nick (plane name-Eagle) Gabe’s plane flew the farthest out of us three, then mine, then Nicks. Gabe’s planes’ average was 1289.2 cm, mine was 968 cm, and Nicks was 429 cm. I also hade a hypothesis that the plane that was the smallest and the most lightweight would be the one that went the farthest distance… it worked.
