Period 6 - Comparing Structure and Function

Hi guys!

Here is the presentation we started looking at in class. I ask that you pick at least 3 of the slides and talk about how the structure of the cells you see there relate to what the body system does that they are a part of.

In class, I said to answer on paper. I would ask that you answer right on the blog instead. Just like usual, use your fake name. In your responses, be sure to say which slide you are talking about.

Have fun!

1)The bronchial tubes split into two so air can go into both lungs
2) The villi are shaped like fingers so the surface area it increased as much as possible
3) Red blood cells are shaped like life savers because it's the best way to move through vains.

Small Intestine: well, the small intestine is full of tiny little fingerlike tendrils called villi. These villi increase the surface area of the small intestine and allow it to absorb more nutrients while taking up the same amount of space in the body. This is how the structure of the small intestine helps it function better.

Respiratory System: the trachea is the long tube which connects your mouth to your bronchioles, allowing air to pass through. Your nose is also connected to the trachea. This way, you can breath through you nose and your mouth and bring in twice the amount of oxygen. (By the way, you can breath through your mouth and nose at the same time, if you don’t have a cold. I tried it.)

Skeletal and Muscular System: this one is about birds. Many bird bones are hollow, and all are very lightweight. This is so that they can fly more easily. Imagine trying to lift out heavy skeletons off the ground! That’s a way the bird’s skeletal-muscular system structure helps it function better.

• Blood cells are round, and kind of shaped like the candy ‘life Savers’ so they can pass through the veins easily.
• The stomach helps by churning the food into chyme and making it easier to pass through the rest of the stages of digestion.
• The trachea is dome shaped to push up and down on the lungs.

villi: little things shaped like fingers to increase the surface area as much as possible.

small intestine: filled with villi which helps the small intestine function properly by letting it get the right nutrients, helping it increase surface area, while taking some amount of space in the body.

Red Blood Cells: shaped like small donuts so it is easier to move through all the viens.

Neurons have tiny strands that branch off into smaller thinner and longer strands so that they can receive messages from a part that is feeling change. This is good because the more they stretch and branch off so they have a wider range for receiving the messages.

Red Blood Cells are in a circular oval shape so the can move through the different blood tubes they need to go through. They also have a small indent or sort of hole so it can carry oxygen through out the body. This is good that they have the hole so that oxygen can stick to it otherwise it would be hard for the red blood cells to transport oxygen.

White Bloods Cells are stretchy and flexible so that they can eat the bad guy’s whole. This is a good quality because it can get ride of more bad guys at one time and faster.

Red blood cells are shaped like an oval so they can g through your veins easily. To go to the rest of your body.

Nervous system is dense and widely spread out through your body so you can feel even the slightest things.

White blood cells fight off/ eat/ absorbed the bad guys so they don’t completely spread everywhere.
and like kill you/ shut down your body.

1. Villi are shaped kind of like fingers so that they can increase surface area as much as it possibly can.
2. You know the candy lifesavers? Well they’re almost an exact copy of the red blood cell! (Only way bigger) It turns out the life savers are the perfect shape to move through our veins!
3. If they ever made a horror movie about a huge white blob that ate everything, it’d probably be based off a white blood cell. White blood cells are really big, and when anti bodies hold down the bad guy, you can say good bye, cause’ it’ll be eaten by the white blood cell in no time.

1.)Small Intestine (Villi)

The Villi’s shape maximizes it efficiency because it makes the surface area a lot larger, increasing the amount of nutrients absorbed into the blood stream.

2.)The Respiratory System

The Respiratory System’s location is ideal because the location of the lungs is close to the mouth, allowing our bodies to take in air and let out carbon dioxide quickly.

3.)Red Blood Cells

The reason that red blood cells’ shape is so efficient is that it fits perfectly through the places it has to be in, and carries a perfect amount of oxygen all through out the body.

1) the neurons are part of the nervous system and they are like telphone polls that send the nerves a message to move or react
2)white blood cells are part of the endocrine system and they eat the bad guys
3)red blood cells are part of the circulatory system and there shape liked life savers because thats the best shape and way for them to move trought the vains

The red blood cells are shaped sort of like life savers because that shape is the most efficient way for them to move through the veins.

The anti-bodies are formed like a ‘Y’ so it can plug into bacteria easily so the red blood cells don’t get infected.

The bronchial tube splits into two so the maximum amount of air can get into the lungs.

1) The white blood cells and the antibodies are part of the immune system and they work together to kill the bad guys.

2) The trachea is part of the respiratory system, and it carries air to your lungs and removes carbon dioxide from the body when you exhale.

3) The red blood cells are part of the immune system, and are shaped to fit through the veins in your body.

The way things are built have alot to do with what they do.
For example:
1. The small intestine is filled up with villi. Villi are shaped like tiny little fingers to increase the surface area of the small intestine. It's job is to increase the SA, so they are shaped in a way that they can.
2. The Respitory system is all about layout. Everything is in perfect distance from each other. Their job is to breath, and the layout lets them do that.
3.The red blood cells are shaped in little circles (like life savers or froot loops) because it is the best way to move through the vains. Their job is to move through the vains, and their shape lets them do that.

1) The villi is a finger like cell that is inside the small intestine, it is there to make more surface area to absorb the water .

2) The nasal cavity is where air goes into lung and also out and provides mucus

1) The villi are disigned so that they can have the best surface area ratio. The villi are built to reach out and absrob as many nutreints as they can.
2) The Neurons branch out so that they can touch as many other Neurons as possible. This allows them to send messages as fast as they can.
3) Alveoli are very small and therefore are able to reach out and do as much as they can.

1) Red blood cells – They are shaped perfectly to go through the veins in your body. This is so we will be able to live and so the veins won’t clog. If the veins clog you will die or get hurt really badly.
2) The Immune System – They fight the bad guys (diseases). They are also shaped perfectly. Ex: the white blood cells are shaped so they will eat the bad guys with out getting sick.
3) The digestive system – The muscle in the digestive system are in the right spots ex: The esophagus muscles push down not up if they pushed up you wouldn’t be able to swallow. If they don’t work to gather your digestive system wont work.

1)Red blood cells are shaped like little ovals so they can fit through the viens because the viens are tube shaped so the red blood cells can moe smoothly.
2)White blood cells are flexible and they eat the bad guy's that try to harm the cell.
3)Antibodies work with the white blood cells to kill the bad guy's that try to harm the body.

the comment above this one was accidently posted

• red blood cels are shaped like donuts or life savers or a tire a ring or a swimmie toob to the move nicley thre vains
• The asaphigis is in a tube shape you it can easly squeeze the food down into the stomach.
•Antibodies are shaped 8in the letter Y so they can fit in the bactiria and take it to the white blood cell wich will then eat it

i think the nucleus is the most importaint because it help the brain works and if the brain is not working you are in trubble

"Incredible Human Machine"

1.One amazing thing i learned from this movie was that your stomach can expand about 20 times bigger than its actual size!!
2.Another thing i thought was really interesting is that your brain doesnt respond to pain. So if you are having an operation on your brain you can be wide awake and not feel it.
3.I also found out that your ears help you keep balance which is pretty amazing because to you and me their these little wierd thing on the side of our heads that help us to hear, but also to help us walk strsight!

a.DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: your stomach can expand about 20 times more than its actual size. But if anythhing else in the digestive system grew that big it wouldnt be to good for your body, and most likely you would die.
b.SKELETAL/MUSCULAR SYSTEM:Bones are 206 of the most important things that you need in your bodies. They make sure that you are all in one piece and strong and not like jello before you place it in the refrigerator.
c.CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: The viens in your circulatory system are very important because they carry yuor blood throughout your body. The circulatory system and the muscular system help eachother out a lot because the circulatory system has viens that carry blood throughout the body but if there were no muscles surrounding the viens all of the blood would just leak to the bottom of your feet.
d.NERVOUS SYSTEM: The brain is a squished up thing in your head that is very dense [[thats because its the smart part of your body]]the brain controls EVERTHING you do!!!..and im not exagerating!
e.EXCRETORY SYSTEM: The excretory system is the bathroom from your inside that holds things until you can get to the bathroom for the outsides! This system collectes all the leftover material that your body produces and finds a way to get rid of them.
