Weekly Science Article Report - Body Systems - Period 9

Hello all.

Here is the place where you would post your weekly science article reports for this week.

Remember that the focus for this week is an article that relates in some way to the body systems we have been studying.

Please add to your reflection how the article connects in some way to what you have been learning in class.

Have fun!

Weekly Science Report

Citation: I read an article called “In Diabetes, a Complex of Causes,” I found this article in the New York Times website under health.

Summery : This article explained all about the leading causes of deaths, but mainly focusing on the causes of diabetes. It describes which body parts effect how you can develop diabetes, including the liver and pancreas. The article stresses to the reader how diabetes causes have become more complex and louder than ever.

Reaction: I thought that this article was very grabbing at my attention and really opened my eyes to yet another subject. I was so interested and also extremely surprised that there are that many complex causes to diabetes. The article was packed with information which made it harder to understand. I would like to know a bit more history on the subject. Including where the causes always so loud and complex or are they just rising now? How is this affecting our society today? Did it ever effect our society? Will it ever? I hope to soon learn more and see this subject around for people to see so that we will learn and be more open towards learning and changing the subject. This article relates to all the body systems and about enzymes, after learning all about these things in class I believe that article was MUCH easier to read and understand than it would have been if I did not learn about the system s and the liver etc. before reading this article.

I found an article at sciencedaily.com that says that high fat diets disrupt the body's clock.
this clock tells us when to go to sleep, wake up, become hungry, and other little things that we take for granted. Well a study from a northwestern university is saying that overeating causes people to intake more calories when we should be resting. This is the reason why when people get fat, they start to eat more and more and more, and then become obese.
if you thought that taking in a simple bag of pretzels at midnight when you're starving is okay, it isn't. in fact your body's clock will start to wake you up at midnight and tell you that you are hungry.
This article was very interesting and it answered my questions about why "fat" people eat more then "not fat" people. I think that this study will help keep the rate of obesity down, and that is important because in the country today, obesity is becoming a huge problem. It can cause heart attack, cancer, stroke, and other "really bad" diseases.
I would like to know this study was carried out because I don't think that people would want to do this study.
So being "fat" is not a term anymore, it's an Addiction?

someone4, i really liked how you explained the article, plus about how well you thought it through. Good Job, try to work on your puncuation, and otherwise try to use the term "fat" as overweight.

1)I foud this article on http://hes.ucf.k12.pa.us/gclaypo/circulatorysys.html#What%20is%20the%20job%20of%20the%20Circulat
2)the article explained everything on the circulatory system. It explained just as I have in my notes.
3)My reaction to this was that the article touched the subject very well but said everything way to much.

Wake Up, Sleepy Gene
March 28, 2007
www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20070328/Note3.asp
E. Sohn

This article is about, do you get enough sleep? Do you do well in school if you get a good or bad night sleep. When you stay up all night and finish schoolwork or a day after a slumber party? Scientists say that your answers depend on your genes.

I like this article a lot because it talks about us, kids and how we need are sleep. It explains on The period3 gene. It comes in two forms: short and long and everyone has two copies of gene. You may have two longs, two shorts, or one of each. I am cranky in the morning and if I do get a really good night sleep I will be happy and not cranky. If I get a short amount of sleep I will be cranky and I wont be able to get out of bed. I think this was a very good article and I think other kids should read it.
Mr. Ardito I could not find a good article, so I hope this one is good

Title: Schools in Several States Report Staph Infections, and Deaths Raise the Alarm
by Ian Urbina
I found this article on the New York Times website.

Summary: In the article it shows how so many students are getting infected and dying from the MRSA Staph infection. After everyone hears the stories about people dying, the school official are having all the schools disinfected and telling everyone to wash their hands and there sports jerseys constantly. It shows that the infection isn’t only spreading in nursing homes and hospitals but in schools and gyms too.

Reaction: This article is very interesting to me because I can relate to it too. Our school has all the flyers and signs everywhere to wash our hands constantly also. The MRSA Staph infection affects the immune system. The infection becomes immune to antibiotics so if you wait long enough, it can’t be cured. I liked how the article gave me a lot of information and it had a lot of statistics.

I really liked the article you chose. I thought it was really interesting. Mabe next time you could go nito more detail of the article?

1.] Citation: I found this article on NYtimes.com on November 10th 2007.

2.] Summary: There is a new machine that can tell if people are smokers or not. When I read this part I wondered, how does it test that. It tests the amount of oxygen in the human’s blood. Scientists where able to do this before but the device they use now is much smaller and is not sensitive to the body.

3.] Reflection: When I read this article I was impressed. You could tell if someone is a true smoker in a matter of 10 seconds. Just slip the device on his/her hand and press the button and you have it. The machine does not say smoker/ non-smoker. It measures the oxygen in your blood. Smokers do not have as much oxygen in there blood as non-smokers. I thought this article was interesting to read but also very informing on the differences between smokers and non-smokers bodies. I was surprised to find out that smokers have less oxygen in there blood because of smoking. I wasn’t exactly surprised, I just never thought about it. I would like to see visuals about the differences between smokers and non-smokers blood oxygen content.

4.] Relations: we have been learning a lot about body systems in class and this article can really relate. We learned that lungs are very important in the body. The article says the same thing and also tells you the risks of smoking.

This article is called "Fuel Without the Fossil." I found this article at http://www.nytimes.com/ under Science.

*Summary*
When I saw this article, I was fascinated. Here is my summary of it. This article is about how scientists have been working on developing alternative, non-polluting fuels for cars and trucks as opposed to using fossil fuels, which are very hazardous and easily pollute the environment. It tells information regarding the future of fuels, and before reading this article, I wasn't sure of my outtake on it. Let me tell you though, now my outtake on the future is a lot greener.

*Reaction"
This article is extravagently well written, describing with great and key details down to the cores the very interesting facts woven inside of its unique blend of literature. I have always been interested in the fossil fuel topic, but now that I've read this article, I realize that before reading this article, I had barely cracked into the full potential of this article. In this article, I learned about how there are so many varieties of matter that fuel ca come from, including: corn, sugars, and yes, even wood chips. From finding out all this useful information, I now know all I could ever know on this subject. I'm sure there is so much more wonderful information that still is out there, but right now, I'm very content with this article I found and I would recommend this article to anyone who wants to read something brilliant and different, as opposed to your usual articles that just give rough analysises of the subject, instead of unlocking the hard-drive of information, uselessly pushed aside for the fear of people not 'understanding' this stuff. On being related to what we are currently studying in class, we are studying how the body can break down and add domestic ingredients (acids, gastric juice, etc.) to food to make it lodge to the foods littlest components and finally, the food turns into enzymes, and this article clearly states a good piece of this subject. It shows how to create the fuel, the scientists have to break down and add ingredients of their own to make it work.

Anonymous said...

to NYjew... I can relate to that article because i know someone with diabetes. i liked your reaction on the article because i would have the same reaction. i like how you write in the blog.

To nyjew,
I liked your report. It was very unique and just very nice. I found your subject matter to be a very good subject matter of choice, and it seems like a great article. For future reference, however, I found your report to be lacking some key details, particularly in the reaction. Just know that next time, it's ok to let out your feelings for when you are reflecting. Other than that though, I found your report to be truly diverse. Excellent work and research jobs!

Citation: The article that I found is called “HIV Drug Resistance Increasing in UK and among Highest in the World” I found it on www.ScienceDailey.com.

Summary: The article basically talks about how HIV drug resistance is the highest ever, especially in the UK. HIV drug resistant means that if you have HIV, the medicine that you take for it doesn’t affect you; the HIV disease changes it’s “bar code” so that the medicine doesn’t detect it.

Reflection: I feel bad for the people who are HIV and AIDS positive, and unfortunately the number is growing. When I first read the article it took me a few times before I really understood what HIV drug resistance was, but when I finally got it I was curious to why people in the UK had a higher rate of people that was HIV drug resistant. Is it because of something that’s airborne in the UK that it’s here? Or maybe it’s partly genitival to be “immune” to certain medicines or treatments? I hope that scientists find a cure for HIV/AIDS before it spreads too much further; I also think that people should be more careful.

How it relates: This article relates to what we’ve been learning about body systems so far in class because we’ve been learning about the immune system and how it fights off foreign bacteria and stuff that’s not supposed to be in your body, and this article was talking about how HIV/AIDS was “out smarting” medicines and the immune system.

To epod7,

The article that you picked sounded very educational as well as interesting. I think that you could have left the first sentence out of your summary and saved it for your reaction (which was very "full" and well done). You left me wanting to read the article that you were explaining about, maybe I will.

P.S. You have quite the vocabulary.

I found the article “Food: The Way We Eat, The Hollywood Diet” by Jennifer Steinhauer on the New York Times website.

*Summary*
This article talks about how people refuse to eat certain healthy foods the “healthy way”. The author mentions that she was hosting a couple for dinner. The couple had basically told her what to prepare and how to prepare it because they wouldn’t eat foods if they were prepared healthily.

*Reflection*
~ I thought that this article was very thought provoking because it doesn’t make sense to me why people wouldn’t eat healthy just to do what they think is “fitting in”.
~ What interests me is the fact that these people that eat that way are in a sense depriving their bodies of certain nutrition. I surprised to learn that people even do that.
~ My question about this article is how come people would do what they are doing to themselves.
~ I would like to know more about the effects that this lifestyle has on our bodies because those people aren’t getting proper nutrition and the foods they eat must be harmful to their body systems as well.

To nyjew:

You did a very good job. Your refection is very thought provoking. I think that next time you should try to make clear what some of the causes of diabetes might be.

To quagmyer:

You did a pretty good job. I think that you could've done much better in that you didn't really explain what the article was about. I also think that you should have given examples to reinforce what you were saying.

To march:

You did a good job. You need to work on your sentence structuring and making what you are saying clearer.

Article: “In DNA era, New Worries about Prejudice”
Author: Unknown
Found at: NyTimes.com
Brief Summery- This article explains the importance of DNA research and how it is helping our science world. This article explains also how many of the results of DNA studies can create prejudice as certain Treatments for genetic mutations are now being placed into different categories such as black and white.
Reflection-
1) I thought this article was informative and interesting. This article also provided a little two much information and was somewhat difficult to read. The information it provided seemed racist in itself I feel that the difference between blacks and white in how their DNA differs should not be considered prejudice.
2) What surprised me about this article it that it ran on for so long it did not need to be as long as it was. Also in resent research all DNA was very similar and now new information shows DNA varies from race.
3) I don’t have any questions about what I read. After reading the article I have a new found interest in genes and DNA and would like to learn more about this subject if we can in class.

*I do not know what certain system DNA falls under.

I got the article “Fresh Case of Bird Flu in Turkeys,” off of pageflakes.com. It took me to the BBC news website.

Summary-
This article is about how a whole turkey farm got the bird flu. They will have to slaughter all the turkeys so the disease does not spread to other farms.

Reaction-
~I thought this was a very good article because it explained the situation very well. It told me what happened with the turkeys with no confusion.
~What interested me was the way that they will prevent the disease from spreading. They will prevent it by slaughtering all the birds. On all the other farms nearby they will keep the turkeys indoors and out of contact with other
birds.
~In the article it said they had a grade H5 case of the bird flu. What does that mean? I would also like to know if birds can give it to people.

Connection to the body systems
This connects to the immune system because the immune system will help you fight the bird flu. The immune system will also prevent you from getting it in the first place.

I found an article called "Circulatory System How the Blood Gets Around the Body" which i got off of google and is on the site thinkquest.org.
This article explained the basics of the circulatory system in ways anyone could understand. It basically tells you what the blood vessels do and what the blood carries.
Honestly I didn't like this article because it seemed aimed at younger people. It didn't have much information either. Next time I'm probably going to check more sites and find a much better one since this one has barely anything in it.

The Article Title- “A Mushroom Extract May Impact on the Body’s Immune System”
Author- Mike Adams
Website Where Article Was Found- www.newstarget.com

Summary:
This article was about how an extract from a mushroom, Turkey Tail, that is commonly found in North America, Asia, and Europe have an impact that is beneficial on the Human Immune System. The mushroom’s extract may be effective in strengthening the human body’s immune system against diseases.

Reaction:
This article was very informative and interesting, yet surprising to me. I would have never guessed that a mushroom, that isn’t even rare or scarce, could have its extract be possibly helpful in the treatments of some types of cancers. One question that I now have is: are there other mushrooms or vegetables that could also have a big impact on the human body’s immune system? How are researchers going to find out?

'Instruction Manual' That Tells Cancers How To Hide From Immune System Discovered

1) I found this article on “Science Daily”

2) This article is about how scientists found out how cancer cells become ‘invisible’ to the immune system. It does this by reducing the production of receptors called MHC I molecules that tag cancer cells so the immune system can take care of them.

3) This article brings hope that one day cancer will be curable because we have finally found out how cancer is undetectable, so we can find ways to detect it. What interested me was the MHC I molecules. They can identify a certain specific type of cell out of the countless trillions. What surprised me was the fact that cancer cells can be so smart that they reduce the production of the thing one thing that can detect them. Now I wonder how scientists, with this new information, will find a cure to the infamous disease. I would like to know more about how receptors like MHC I work.

4) This relates to what we are learning in science because we are learning about the Immune System and how it fights diseases, and cancer is a disease.

Citation: Nano Hazards: Exposure to minute particles harms lungs, circulatory system, by Janet Raloff, I found this article at science news .com

2) this article is about how nonmaterial’s are showing up in products such as cosmetics. These particles could be harmful to the manufacturers.

3) I did like this article until I got to the part saying that they tested the nanoparticles on animals. They squirted nanoparticles into the respiratory tracks of rats.
They said that carbon nanospheres caused no harm, then they said that an equal mass of commercially available carbon nanotubes caused lung damage, even killing a few animals.
It supridsed me that they told us that they tested this on animals and they told us that it killed a few. I am wondering how this damages your DNA? Also I would like to know more about the immune system cells that trapped the nanotubes then died.

“The Electric Brain”
This article was about how scientists are starting to cure mentally disabled people by putting an electrical device deep inside their brain. Before this implant, one paitinet couldn’t even move, talk, or eat. But after this implant in the thalamus, he could start to give noticeable responses, drink water from a glass, and so on. I thought that this article was interesting and easy to read. It relates to what we are learning in school because these electric devices are electrodes that transmit electric currents, to jump start the thalamus. If the thalamus stops completely working, the body won’t be able to keep homeostasis because the thalamus sends messages to the rest of the body, and the body wouldn’t be able to function if it didn’t know what to do. Also getting it to work faster would help the patient use his hand, and other parts of the body.

Citation: I found an article called "Bone marrow transplants harmful to some" on MSNBC.com under health. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21757467/

Summary: This article was pretty much about what happens if a bone marrow transplant goes wrong, and then what scientists are doing right now to help lower the risks of you being saved from cancer, only to be killed by your transplant. It gives enough detail about the dangers of bone marrow transplants so you know what on earth it's talking about, and then gives you details on varioius theories and expariments.

Reaction: I thought that this article was a waste of time to be written. Half of it is just details that just about everybody knows already, and then the rest is just vague ideas and in the early stages of testing that affect 6,000 new Ameicans every year. I mean, yeah, I know 6,000 is a lot, but not in the big picture, when you think about how many people there are in just one American city (like New York City, for example)

Wow. I'm really negative towards all the articles I read, aren't I?

Anyway, I would've liked it if the article was a little more.. interesting. I'm sorry, and maybe that it's just me being tired right now, but I could barely keep my eyes open through the whole thing. A little more history and background would've been nice, maybe? (I know that I just complained about most of it being common sense, but that doesn't mean it isn't interesting. Yes, I am crazy like that) I was also wondering what exactly makes you end up needing a bone marrow transplant in the first place. If these studies work, could transpolants end up one day becoming completely risk free?

This article had to do with what we're doing in class right now, and what we've been doing for the past million years (I'm 13, that's code for 3 weeks) because it has to do with the immune system. How does this have to do with what we're doing in class? If you guessed, "Because it's a body system!" then you're right. Congratulations on knowing what we're doing. Anyway, the article mentions how the immune system may end up attacking transplanted organs, which is what we learned that it does to other invaders.

Now that I think about it, I'm also wondering if there's any diseases that can make your body attack your natural organs (or rather, the ones that you're had for your whole life, not transplanted or anything).

rescue: I liked that in your reaction you acted humane and said that you didn't like the article after it mentioned testing on animals. Your summary was a bit too vague though, so I had no idea what on earth you were talking about (lol)

cire: You had a really interesting sounding article, and you did a really nice job with your summary; it told the reader what they wanted to know, but didn't go on and on for ages after that.

someone4: I seriously never knew that about midnight snacks. It's pretty weird that just eating something a few times in the middle of the night can make it next to impossible to get a good night's sleep for a long time. You had a few capitolization errors and whatnot, but aside from that I really liked your report.

Title:Sharp Drop Seen in Deaths From Ills Fought by Vaccine
By:Donald G. McNEIL Jr.

Summery: This article is about how doctors and scientists have seen a huge decrease in deaths and hospitalizations in deseases that vacines were aprooved and used for.

Reaction: I wouldnt think it would be that suprising. Vacines help you to not get a desease...so if you got a desease [that you got a vacine for]i would be suprised. I liked this artice though because it wasnt too confusing and the language wasnt too science-ish.

This article had to do with the body systems because vacines are to help your immune system to make white bloodcells to fight off that certain desease.

Science Article Report

I found this Article at joslin.com. This article is named “Avoiding the Long-Term Complications of Diabetes.”

This article is about how people that have diabetes can avoid serious complications. They can avoid serious complications by working with doctors to achieve blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible to reduce the risks of long-term complications. This is very important, and could possibly extend your life if you have diabetes. You just have to continue your day-to-day process. There are many ways to do that:
A1C – is a blood test that measures your blood over the past 2-3 months. It is very important because it is the best way to measure your overall glucose control.

Blood Pressure - You have to measure your blood pressure because when you have diabetes, your blood pressure is usually high. It can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney and eye diseases.

Those are just two of the many ways to stay healthy while you have diabetes.

This article was surprising to me because when you have diabetes, there are so many things that can happen to you. For example, like I said before, when you have diabetes, your blood pressure is usually very high. If you don’t watch your blood pressure, and it gets too high, then you can have a heart attack. I knew that diabetes was extremely bad, but I didn’t know that it could give you heart attacks.

I wonder how doctors come up with medicines to treat all of these sicknesses. These medicines actually cure people! I wonder how much time and devotion it takes to make a treatment for a horrible disease like diabetes and cancer! Although there is no cure for diabetes, I am sure they are working on it.

I would like to learn more about how to actually perform the tests to avoid the Long-Term Complications of Diabetes.

While I read this article, I thought to myself: There are a lot of people in this world that have died from diabetes, and now I know why. It is not only because some people don’t stay on track with all of the medicine, and things that they are suppose to do to stay healthy, but sometimes; you just can’t do anything else. Sometimes it’s just out of your control. I would really like to know how you get diabetes.

This is related to what we do in science because we have studied the Endocrine system a lot in class and Diabetes is the most common disorder of the endocrine system. In fact, the number of people with diabetes doubles every 15 years.

Weekly Science Article Report

Information

This article was adapted from materials provided by University of Arkansas and was written on November 12, 2007. I found it on the computer address: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071109214121.htm

Summary

My article was about how scientists have been able to create an edible food wrap (mostly for meat) that actually fights off all pathogenic bacteria that lies in our meat. Although they have realized with different product the effectiveness will vary, it still is a breakthrough in science and safety for our body.

Reflection

I could relate this article to class because it talks about one of the body systems we have been studying: digestive system. We learned a little bit about germs and disease infiltrating the body. I thought this was kind of like that. But I really didn’t know that much about bacteria in the food going through the system when we eat it. It sounds very dangerous and not sanitary. I am glad that when I did find out now, it was because they were telling us they could prevent it.
But even though I can connect this article to class I still found it not for me. They didn’t explain enough about the bacteria; the vocabulary surpasses me very much at some points; it also had no pictures whatsoever which made it hard for me to visualize what it was saying. Overall I can say that this article was confusing and a little poorly written. But it still teach me a little about how to eat my food!

nyjew, I really like How you wrote this article, It was Very easy for me to read. I liked how you asked questions. You did a good job on grammar but I found a few punctuation mistakes. Good Job :)

Forget-me-not, good job, great information. it was nice for you to put the information where you got your article so I could go read it myself. But this was very confusing for me in your summary when you said they have bin able to create a wrap? are not those already invented? or do they just put medicine in them? next time please write more about the wrap please. But your reflection was Great! it is very detailed and told me what you have learned about the article and in class. good job thanks.

March, good job, also I liked how you put the information to the Article. at first look I couldn't see which one was summary or Reflection but I figured it out. I can really relate to what you are talking about in your reflection. I always have sleep overs and this is very interesting because my dad says that I need my sleep to do well in school (lets see if he is right.)
