Connecting with Our Australian Friends

As we discussed in class, we are going to reach out to our new Australian friends and colleagues. We are going to do this in three ways:
1. I am asking that some of you respond to Mrs. Gow's question about our garden. You might share with her how we researched the plants and organized themselves.
2. Please find one of Mrs. Gow's students and introduce yourselves to them. You can find their blogs here.
3. Please look over the joint Australian/American assignment on animals that we will be collaborating on. You can find it here.

Have fun!

Hi, my name is katherine.
I think I posted stuff about me on one of your students called "amzy".
Our class planted a lot plants and vegetables. We planted tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, watermelons, and potatoes. I think that tomatoes are now classified as a fruit? Well, for plants, the names of them are completly GONE from my memory. Sorry!

Oops, I posted my name on here! Mr.Ardito, can you pleas erase my name off of here?

Dear Mrs. Gow
Our garden is going very well so far. We have most of the plants we want planted, but there are still some seeds that we need to grow in our classroom. We have made a watering schedule for the garden so we don't forget. We have done so much to make our garden great, so I think that it will turn out great! Good luck with yours!

Dear Mrs. Gow,

We planted many things in our garden. We planted vegetables such as carrots and tomatoes. We also planted many flowers (I don't know the names of them). We planted corn and watermelons. We made our garden in the shape of a smiley face, so the eyes are flowers, the nose is vegetables, the cheeks are strawberries, the mouth is an assortment of things (I'm not positive on what) and the ears are corn.

To choose the plants that we decided to plant, we got into small groups (of 2 people) and we did research projects. Each group had to choose 3 plants and then do a PowerPoint (slideshow of information) on why they are good plants to plant in the Ardito garden.

We had a lot of fun in the process and can't wait to see what the garden looks like when it grows! Thank you for taking the time to look at our slide show. I hope to hear back from you and your students!

Sincerely,

Hi Year 7 Students,
Thanks for all your messages about the garden. How many different fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts do we eat? You may like to try this brain-storming activity at: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcdxvn6b_0c53fmscg
It is a table called "Parts of the Plant that we Eat" and I have given an example in each column. My class could think of sixty seven!

hi Mrs. Gow,
I wanted to try and answer your questions. For nuts , I was thinking of all the nuts I've ever eaten: Macadamia, Pistachio, Walnut, Almond, Hazelnut, Pine nut, Pecan, Peanut, Coconut(although we don't eat it all), Cashew, Brazil Nut and that's either all I've eaten or all I could think of. Some kinds of seeds we eat are pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds, grape seeds, corn seeds and many others. I know we eat lots of different kinds of fruits and vegetables and they all help us, but if I were to name all of them it would take a lot of space and time. I bet our class will do the same activity you did in your class on the smart-board. I thank you again for taking time to look at our slideshow and garden.

Hi Mrs. Gow!

I’m so excited about doing this partnership with your class! To try and answer your question, our garden is going really well. People water everyday and there is caution tape surrounding it so no one tramples it. We’re going a lot of things, but my favorites are the watermelons, the pumpkins and the corn. The flowers are really pretty too but I can’t remember what there called. Thanks for watching our slideshow and I can’t wait to talk to everyone somemore!

Dear Mrs Gow and the Year 7 Science Students,

Two of the science classes in our grade have started planting a garden. Before we started, we had to do a lot of research to plan what types of plants could grow in the garden. We had to research how much water and sunlight they liked, as well as what type of care was needed to make them grow and survive. After everyone presented their slide show, we voted on which flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables we wanted to include. There was a lot of work involved before we got to the actual planting of the garden.

On the day of the planting, we took a small plot of land in the front of our school and planted things such as corn, tomatoes, flowers, basil, mint, strawberries and watermelons. It was really fun!

I think that the thing that will be challenging is the maintainence part of our garden. People have to be willing to come in on their own time to water and weed the garden. It will be very hard to organize, but we have to do it to make our garden survive.

I've had a lot of fun making this garden so far, and i can't wait to work with you and the kids in your class!

Dear Mrs.Gow,
I don't think I answered your questions about our garden enough. Mr.Ardito has two 7th grade classes and each of us with a partner made powerpoints (powerpoint is program that we have on the computer that allows you to make slideshows and presentations) about 3 things we woudl like in our garden. Then as a group of the two classes we chose a variety of flowers that are easy to grow, look pretty or they just thought they were cool and a variety of herbs and vegtables. So far the deer haven't eaten them, thankfully. We have a lot of Deer in New York. When you plant your garden you should think of you're local pests and come up with ways to prevent them from eating all your hard work!
:-)
-hope I answered your questions!!

Dear Mrs. Gow,
Both of Mr. Ardito's 7th grade classes built a garden. So far our garden looks really good and we have vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. It has been raining a lot so the plants have grown really well. Both of our classes voted on which plants to grow in the garden and we have most of the plants that were voted on. Our garden is set up in a happy face. =)

Dear Mrs. Gow,

This year in our science class we are planting a LOT of fruits, vegetable, herbs, etc. From what I can remember, we are planting corn, pumpkins, watermelons, strawberries and other berries. We also are planting corn, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and I think potatoes. And I can't forget about all the flowers we planted, but I cannot remember all the names of them. But so far the garden is coming along really well and I can't wait to see next year in 8th grade.

Oh, and we planted it as a smiley face. I planted an "ear" of corn. =)

Dear Mrs. Gow,
We're growing a lot of stuff in our garden. We planted corn, cucumbers, watermelons, strawberries and lots and lots of flowers (I can't remember their names) in the shape of a face.
It took a LOT of work to get to the planting stage. We all made slide-shows about what plants we wanted to grow in our garden. Then we presented our nominees to the class. After that, we had to vote on our favorites. Once that was done, we started some of the seeds in our classroom. Finally, we had a big planting party to get our garden started!

I am so excited about working with your class!

From, peaceXO

Thanks to James for his comment on my blog and all the other students who have posted here. We are all looking forward to collaborating too. This week all year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students had to sit National literacy and numeracy tests - 5 tests at each level over three days.
I will take a picture of our very sad garden as a 'before' example to show you how much work we need to do!
I love the idea of an 'ear' of corn.
We are also planning a "Bush Food, Fibre and Medicine" garden at our school, which is about all the plants that indigenous people may have used hundreds of years ago. It won't need as much water as our vegetable garden, because native plants are adapted to our dry climate.

We tried to shape our garden into a face while we planted it, but that did not work nearly as well as we thought it would. In our garden, we planted corn, strawberries, pumpkins, flowers and a bunch of other plants. All of the plants are growing really well a some of the strawberry plants even have a few green strawberries.

Yeah, about the face thing... that really didn't work at all... Mr A. I tried the link that Mrs. Gow gave us but it brought me to some other page with something on Google. So I couldn't do that part, but I introduced myself to someone on the blog, and took a look (rhyme, heh heh) at the assignment that were doing.

P.s. Can you post the schedule for who's supposed to water the garden on the blog so people can check back whenever they want to find out? Thanks
