Making Connections Reflection - Period 6

You have spent this lab working with a partner to investigate a claim. The claim may have been about something fairly trivial, but the process you followed is exactly the one used by scientists around the world.

Now that you have completed this experiment, it is time to look back and think about what you have learned. Look over the following questions and then write a two to three-paragraph reflection that answers them. This is to be done on your own.

  • What have you learned about how scientists work and the methods they follow?
  • Why do you think this method would add to scientific knowledge?
  • What would you do differently next time in terms of how your group performed your experiment?

Making connections lab reflection

By doing this experiment (clothes pin squeezing) I have learned that even a small, almost insignificant idea is interesting. This was a pretty cool lab and it was fun to find the conclusion. Maybe this method ( exercising before you squeeze a clothes pin) can be used by sports teams. Before my next essay I will definitely jog in place while writing a funky sentence to warm up my fingers!
This lab showed me the methods scientists use (the scientific method) to get accurate results and to repeat them. It also showed me how to record data in an easy-to-read way and so that other people can do the experiment if needed. This is important in case somebody doesn’t believe in the results I got, so they can repeat the experiment.
There are definitely some things I would do differently if I did this lab a second time. First, I would have a five-minute break between each trial, to give the tester’s body a chance to recuperate because by the time I did the third test I was really tired. Second, I would try lots of different people for testers to get a more accurate result.

I have learned that scientists have to write down the steps clearly so if someone want to repeat the experiment they would have the same result. During the clothespin experiment we had two different people one rested and the other exercised for one and a half minute and then they would be timed for a minute to see how many time they could squeeze the clothespin 3 times each and then switch. My partner and I thought that if you exercise you would do better but we found it to be the opposite.
I feel our group did a great job during the experiment. Maybe we could have tried next time to write down more steps or explained what we did a little better when we typed the paper.

I have learned from this lab how to write down instructions clearly and the importants of writeing them down. I thought this lab was pretty cool. This lab was also pretty hard

When doing the clothespin squeezing lab i have learned that there is an answer for even the smallest things, you just have to find the right information and do the right work.
I think scientists do a lot of hard work to find any kind of solution, or answer. If they are lucky they will find more than one answer. I think that they are very specific in what they need to run a safe and meaningful experiment.
I think this method can be used a variety of different ways whether you're on a sport team, or you really want to find out something. I would say that although this experiment takes a lot of work, and it may not be for everyone i think it still is a very good way to determine whether any kind of a hypothesis that you make is right or wrong or maybe even both.
Next time i think i would try to have more research in terms of the subjects that we used to help my partner and I.

I learned that most scientists follow the scientific method closely, assuring that it is well detailed, clear, easy to understand, doable, easy to do again and edited. The scientific method is something good to follow because it acts almost like a organization check list for the final report on the experiment, including your hypotheses, title, procedure and thoughts an how to improve your experiment for the next person to try.
I think this method would add to scientific knowledge because by clearly stating all the information in the scientific method form, another scientist can later on test out your theory and perform your experiment and assure that you were accurate.
Next time I would probably space out the experiment in three days, so we could do the first part one day, then the other part the next day ect...

Reflection

I liked this project and didn’t. I liked doing the experiments. The steps to do the lab were a little confusing but we did it. I never new I could squeeze a cloths pin that much. When we typed up our lab up I didn’t think it would be that hard to type the directions. Mr. Ardito was so right about if you don’t type the directions right it will be hard to fallow. It was fun doing the experiments the putting down the data. And our hypothesis was wrong. It wasn’t what we thought it would be. I liked doing the lab and it was kind of fun.

Scientists are basically bakers. They either write a recipe for others to follow, or they try out a recipe already made by others. And although what scientists do seems really hard, it’s not. They follow a few simple guidelines (Question, Hypothesis, Procedure, Conclusion, Changes) to either make or do an experiment. But you do need to know these things to be a real scientist, at least in my eyes. It’s like code, or a rule book, that all science people know. It’s like how everyone in Mrs. Powers’ class knows what F.A.H. is or how people in Mrs. Barnes’ know what a Mix-and-Mingle is. People in Mr. Ardito's class, and any other scientific environment, should know the scientific method. But just because you follow the method, doesn’t mean things work out perfectly. I know my experiment didn’t. If I did it again though, I would probably do the same things I did this time, unless given more time. If I had a lot more time, I would have the change to take it further, and collect more data.

I learned a lot from the cloths pin lab. I learned how scientists’ work and the methods they use. I learned that they always make sure to include every detail so another person can do it again. They record everything they did and write down any observations they may have. The method would add to science because if every one uses it then it would be able to understand other report. If every one did their reports in different forms then reading each report would be harder to understand. During this lab I learned how to record data in a neat and organized fashion. Next time I would do more stretches and hold them for longer. I would also relax for a longer time in between each trial.

The clothespin was a fun lab. lab Scientis do alot to find out a question.I also leaned that there could be more than qone answer to your question. My hypotheisis was correct. Also I learned without a hypothesis this experiment willl be alot more diffuclt. This experiment was very tiering and hard but it tought us alot.
Its better to have a lot of information when doing this experiment.

mr. arditio,

my blog entry bleow this one was not finsh and accidently posted so this is my real one.

The clothespin lab was a fun lab. Scientists do alot of tests and reserch to find out a question.I leaned that there could be more than one answer to your question. Also I learned without a hypothesis an experiment will be alot more diffuclt becuase you wouldnt know what you are looking for.
This experiment was very tiering and hard becuse all of my jumping jacks and squeezing the clothes pin 150 times. But, it tought us alot.
Its better to have a lot of information when doing this experiment. You also will get more accurate results if you use one person only

I learned that scientists work really really hard to do an exparment and that they have to fallow alot of steps to get to were they want in the exparment. The methods that we used was we tryed the exparment both exercise and resting then we put done the rusults and took notes on the changes of the numbers going higher when you rested first. The method would help to scientific knowledge because your doing it hands on not just looking up numbers online or something. My group worked fine with the experiment but next time i would like to do it agin but with more people and diffrent types. (fat, thin, tall, short)

I learned that scientists investigate every little possibility for the question they are working with. Even if it doesn’t seem like a big deal, being consistent and thinking of every possibility is a good idea. Who knows, maybe you could figure something out by testing something no one else thought mattered. I didn’t think that clothespin testing mattered, and maybe it doesn’t, but by testing a little clothespin it might help figure out bigger things. Like, maybe it could help figure out if exercising before doing other activities will improve your performance, and I did figure out some interesting information from the experiment. The methods scientists use are very detailed and descriptive. They have to be good thinkers and creative. Scientists can’t skip a step or it could ruin the whole experiment.
I think this method adds to the scientific knowledge because getting very detailed and descriptive may take more time, but in the end you have more information to work with. It’s a lot easier to draw a conclusion when you have good information than when you have very little.
My group performed the experiment ok, we were pretty descriptive. Sometimes we weren’t as accurate or consistent as we should have been, and I think next time if we had more time to perform the experiment we could do better. We have to budget our time better and not goof off at all.

I learned that scientists have to use the scientific method every time they do a lab experiment to get an accurate answer. They also have to state everything as clearly as possible so if someone were to re-do your lab experiment, they would know specifically do.
I think this would add to scientific knowledge because if another scientist were to re-do your experiment they would need to know specifically what to do. If your lab report was really vague, then maybe the other scientist wouldn’t do the experiment correctly and get a different answer then you did. Therefore you would have to write down all the steps and procedure as clearly as possible.
Next time my group and I would try to use different types of people. It would most likely differ between fat or skinny, and tall of short people when it comes down to the conclusion.

I defiantly learned a lot of things from this experiment and trying it out. What I learned about how the way scientist work is how they observe the experiment very carefully and make sure they get things right. Another thing I learn is that it does not matter what experiment you are doing or how small it is, it can really have a meaning and show you that you can learn a lot from it. I think a lot of methods are useful and can be used for many different things. The exercise we used in class can be used to warm up your fingers. I think it’s always better to practice before something so you get better at it. Like studying before a test or running on a treadmill before running a marathon. I would have probably done a different experiment with a different exercise to see if it changes the variables behavior. Kind of like a experiment that would take more than one day. I hope to do more experiments like this in the future.

What I learned about being a scientist is that you have to work hard on your steps of the experiment because another scientist later might want to do the experiment too. This lab added to my knowledge about the scientific method because i'm not always careful about my writing directions, because i think it's just for me sometimes, and other people have to read these directions. I fi were to do this experiment again, what I would do differently is that i would have rested longer, and jumped more. And we should have gotten diffent people to be the testers each time, me and my partner were too of the only tester.

Lab Reflection

In this lab, I learned how importaint it is to write down derections clearly and in an understandeble manner.
I think this would add to my, and anyone else who sees my lab scintific knowledge because it would just be a WHOLE lot easier to read and understand. Also, if its easier to understand and read you might be able to find mistakes in your data or spelling.
If I perform this lab again the one reaaaaly big thing I would do that would affect the data would be changing the way you exercise before squeezing from just moving your fingers to actually doing somthing physically active like running, or jumping jacks. Another thing I'd think on doing is changing the way you would rest before squeezing the closepin from doing nothing except standing still to laying down, or maybe have a snack while sitting on a comfy chair.

Squeezing cloths pin lab reflection.
By pinkcat101

I tough this lab was fun but more work than last year. I liked this lab because

- I had a partner that I liked working with,
- We got to do the experiment and see the results.
- While we were in the proses of experimenting we also got to see
other peoples results and what they did.
- Even though it was painful in the beginning I still had lost of fun
doing the lab.

I think this lab was tring to see us that if you are exersised and
not tired you would do better thats what the expeiment showed me. It
also showed me that If you rest and not already active you fell lazyer
and you wond to as well as you thought you might.

Making connection lab reflection

They work together to make an experiment that works. They have to do the experiment right and write the steps out correct so that the person testing it don't do it wrong. It would add to scientific knowledge because then the experiment will work and not fail because it has to do with nerves also.

I would have a different partner because my partner didn’t really do anything in this experiment. Also next time I would plan it out better. I would also make a better experiment. I would also make a better way to experiment.

I would like a partner that actually does some work and does not fool around and chat also not doodle all the time.

Scientists follow up on their claims. They like to discover that they are right or wrong and will go through many tests to get the answer. Scientists have to follow a certain set of rules so that they can be believed and the product of the experiment can be correct. The procedures must be followed, so that the experiment can be reproduced, and proved over and over again.
One of the ways that this method adds to the scientific knowledge is that, as stated above, other people can prove or disprove the original experiment. This will also let the other people tweak the experiment so that they can build on the original scientist’s work, and learn much more about the topic.
I would take even more data in to prove more. This way I could prove much more and be able to learn what the normal for must people were.

The clothes pin experiment was pretty fun. My hypothesis was if you squeeze a clothes pin for a certian amount of time you can squeeze a clothes pin faster. I think that are experiment would of been better if we put more time into it. ALso i think that if i had a different partner than i would have done better because i under stood what we had to do but my partner kept getting confused and asking for help so that wasted a lot of time. Although i had a pretty good time with my partner. We had to re-write our report because it had to be repetable

This is a test comment to see if this is really working.

I learned that scientists have to follow their methods or their experiment wouldn’t work like they wanted it to. I think the method would add to scientific knowledge because if we didn’t have methods to follow, we would always be wrong and never get it right so that is why I think that the method should be added into the scientific knowledge. I think that me and my partner should add another person to do the experiment so that we can compare her and mine squeezing the clothes pin.
